Well written and truly encyclopedic, the OCB is OCD in the best ways. If you love cracking a cold one and settling in with a good book and perhaps some Bill Evans on the stereo, this beery tome looks to be good for years of pleasant mental meandering.I've been brewing beer for ten years now and still feel like I may know the specifics, but the miracle of fermentation bringing mellow joy still happily baffles me. It's fun to learn about all those yeasty beasties in their frothy oceans of ale, and the OCB aims to cover any and all topics the brewer and/or drinker might have in mind; it seems to have hit the mark. There are a whole tonne of somewhat arcane things Oliver mentions here that make for fascinating reading.Well printed on good paper, this volume seems destined to be perused on many sofas for many years while many beers are lifted. And so should it be, for we gentle lovers of ales and lagers have always deserved our own reference book. And this is without doubt the Beer Book we have been waiting for.Prost.

As the title implies, you can't go wrong with this book. It is a massive, heavy, coffee-table straining tome on all things BEER! If the Encyclopedia Britannica had a volume dedicated to beer, this would be it. Topics run the gambit in alphabetical order from tasting to styles to brewery histories to ingredients to brewing techniques...just about everything.I can verify another reviewer's observation of some proof-reading mishaps. The most blatant that comes to mind is a page of illustrations of vintage beer postcards, where one that is CLEARLY Austrian is in classic "Dumb and Dumber" fashion labeled as being "Australian".It's a small nitpick, however, for a work of such a grandiose scope, that takes itself so seriously, focused on such an entertaining topic. I can't even imagine how much work this sucker took to compile and write. If you're even remotely interested in beer, you need this in your living room or man cave.

First of all let me say that the service and price I paid for the book through Amazon could not be beat. The book is simply bound with blank end pages. It has very few photo plates considering the number of pages and amount of information in the book. The Editor in Chief, Garrett Oliver brings elegance to the undertaking of the job which is well bore out in the Preface. Horst Dornbusch who is Associate Editor as well as founder of Cerevisia Communications is a great asset to the of compilation which is a massive undertaking for the subject. Another heavyweight in the industry and advisory board is Charles Bamforth. It is difficult to undertake any serious research of beer without coming across his name. While the book is very modest in print it is behemoth in content. The topical outline is comprehensive. Each subject is a wealth of concise information in relatively brief entries. Reading such an entry requires a great amount of meditation on the subject. A book of this depth is well overdue. No serious beer writer, researcher, aficionado or consumer should be without this book.

This encyclopaedia covers every imaginable aspect of beer. Each entry is sufficiently detailed and written in a manner which is easily readible and despite the details, is easily understood by non-brewing people. Many different people have written the entries each with their own field of expertise. Font is relatively small but clear; printing and binding excellent (the book is nearly 500 double sided pages). A minor criticism may be that for non-American readers there is a slight over-emphasis on American beer compared with beer from other parts of the world, however the overall impression is one of balance. Thoroughly recommended.

Bought this as a gift for my big brother. Received it at my office, and leafed through it before I wrapped it. This is a very thorough encyclopedia of beer-related information. There were areas of beer I thought I knew a lot about, and after leafing through this, I realized I have a LOT more to learn about beer. Not that I will mind going out to learn more in beer pubs, brewhouses, alehouses, breweries and all of the places beer is available. Fantastic illustrations and photographs, and very well-written. A recommended read.

The most informative book on any beer note you're browsing for...It's like asking a pro for a brief on any subject you need.Covers so much... Amazing.

In the couple of months that I've had this book, it has answered every single question I've had about beer in a readable and interesting manner. I wouldn't recommend this book as an instructional manual on how to taste beer. It is encyclopedic in nature, and contains individual entries on a multitude of topics. If you are looking for a guide on how to taste beer, I'd recommend Tasting Beer: An Insider's Guide to the World's Greatest Drink.

I'd seen this book and briefly scanned it to determine whether I wanted to buy it for my son-in-law, who is a home brew maker. I gave it to him at Christmas; we practically had tugs of war for who got to read through it - this is the most thorough and interesting book on the history of the brew; great reading ... I can recommend this book with no hesitation. I don't make beer, but it was sure interesting!
