“To those who airbrush the joys are well known, as well of course, the trials and tribulations of managing the instrument itself. The airbrush student has to learn significant new skills - to master not only colour and shade, but also air pressure, paint consistency and the diverse ways of masking and shading that can help to achieve such wonderful results.”  —Professor Andy Penaluna

Great book. Only complaint is that I purchased the ebook version and am unable to use the viscosity chard since there is no way to gauge the size of the chart which is critical if one is to use it. Also there is no instructions on ow one is to gain access to the author to purchase a copy of the full size chart. Getting the chart was my prime reason for purchasing the book.

Worth the cost. I purchased the Kindle version for my Mac and love having it with me when I forget a technique or try a new method for my airbrush work. Really well written and I have referred to the "flow" chart more than a few times with my paint viscosity.I bought the book after watching Fred on YouTube. Great video - great book. Love that I could get it through Amazon. If your new to airbrushing this is a must have reference.

The first half of this book gives a lot of good information about airbrush history, use, care, maintenance, and troubleshooting. I found the projects not to be very useful to a beginner. The landscape project gave some general info about masking but was not very practical to follow step by step. The artist's landscape was not that great either. The rest of the projects were way too advanced.

This is an excellent book for someone who knows nothing about airbrushing and is just considering the challenge. It may not make sense to anyone else, but to me it was worth knowing in advance that it is not for me !!!When I set about doing art work, the tool is but an instrument. If I must be a slave to it, then it defeats the purpose. The details of maintenance and use with all the intricate parts told me I would probably be spending more timefussing with it than actually using it productively.Very candid and honest book. I recommend it highly to anyone who is uncertain if this is what they want to do.

Got it for my friend for Christmas. He really likes it. Says it's the best present.

Awesome book with lots of usefull info

This book is filled with some great tips and airbrushing how to instructions. The viscosity chart is very helpful. It's worth the price. Though I do question the fact that it's supposed to be new. It had not cover jacket and the cover was dented. If I would have know I would have opted for a used and cheaper version.

After studiying industrial design and modelling at university, the author Fred Crellin now owns his own company specializing in portraits and cartoons created by airbrush. In this 2013 hardcover book, Crellin takes the inexperienced or part-experienced airbrusher through the development of the airbrush, choosing and maintaining an airbrush and the materials and equipment needed before getting down to the different techniques involved: basic patterns, landscapes, masks, freehand airbrushing, frisket film and cutting stencils using a computer. There are chapters on airbrushing 3-D models using masking tape, cake design and creating designs on cotton and leather clothing, and on vehicles.Overall this is a good guide written to inspire confidence in the aspiring airbrusher by equipping him with all the basic tools and demonstrating what can be achieved with a little imagination, time and effort. The writing style is engaging and the book lavishly illustrated in color, with step-by-step instructions for each different technique.Recommended.

Rebirth is definitely a comic for hardcore DC fans and casual fans will likely be completely lost. We find out that Batman learned that there are THREE Jokers from "the chair". Huh? You'd have to have read Darkseid War to get that reference, the chair being Metron's Mobius Chair. You'd have to have read Flashpoint (a rather poorly received crossover) to understand why Wally West disappeared. There is an interrogation of a woman that I ASSUME is Saturn Girl but I have no idea how it ties into anything else. A woman who, I assume is Pandora, gets blasted to oblivion by some unknown killer but you'd have to read Trinity War to recognize her. Superman is apparently dead (which would probably shock most casual fans) yet Clark Kent appears to be still alive. You'd have to have read 'The Final Days of Superman' to get that.A lot of sections are clearly lead ins to other books and are just thrown in haphazardly. We discover that the Atom is trapped in the atomic world and needs Ryan Choi to find him and prevent universal destruction. Dr. Fate approaches Ted Kord concerned about the power of the scarab. Some glimpses are just a couple of panels long. There is a female Green Lantern with a glowing lantern tattoo over her eye asking, 'who's Sinestro?' The point is that Wally West, who was removed from continuity after Flashpoint, has somehow tapped into the DCU and recognizes that it wasn't Barry Allen saving the life of his mother that caused reality to change. It was an external force more powerful than Darkseid and now Wally is just kind of travelling around, disembodied, observing the new changes caused by the Rebirth.I can't put myself into the mind of a casual DC reader. Personally, I like mystery and I like comics that sometimes require additional research. The reason I'm knocking off a star is because there really isn't a story here, just teasers. This is a really weird reboot since the new 52 continuity, for the most part, will continue with some slight tweaking. I'm also confused as to how the pre-Flashpoint Superman continued to exist and the original Wally West has returned. Rebirth also makes it clear that both pre and post-Flashpoint Wally West's exist at the same time which seems really messy for a company trying to clean things up.Rebirth has almost uniformly fantastic artwork with just a few dud frames. I really enjoyed the additional artwork in the back of the book. The highlight of the book is the reuniting of Barry Allen and Wally West and some consider this the most powerful moment in comics for 2016. The force behind Flashpoint and Rebirth has been revealed but as yet I've seen nothing scheduled to continue this story line. Hopefully all of the questions about characters from different continuities colliding will be answered. I also pray that DC doesn't screw up the usage of Alan Moore's Watchmen.

Great quality book. The pages that are used in this book are some of the thickest I've seen in a graphic novel. There's no dust jacket (which some people prefer) and this is a larger book. Many of you probably own the hardcover Killing Joke book, you might have noticed the book's a little taller than your usual hardcopy trade. The Rebirth book is the same size, so the pages are slightly larger for a bit more art.Something to note in case you're not the type to read the description of an item before you buy it: THIS IS JUST THE 80 PAGE COMIC THAT LAUNCHED THE REBIRTH SERIES. THIS CAME OUT IN THE SUMMER IN A NORMAL SINGLE ISSUE COMIC FOR $4.99. YOU ARE PAYING THE $8 EXTRA FOR THE DELUXE HARDCOVER EDITION. This is for collectors, not for those that just want to read it and toss it. Just get the Kindle version for a few bucks if you just want to read it. Don't be upset and give a one star rating just because you expected more than the 80 page comic that came out over the summer. Rebirth has been great so far, can't wait to find out more about this mystery!

DC Rebirth was a breath of fresh air for DC fans. After Flashpoint had rebooted the entire DC Universe with the New 52, fans thought they'd never see the old continuity again. But it happened, with the DC Rebirth one-shot issue reincorporating the old DC Universe into the New 52, with a mystery behind the whole initiative. Written by Geoff Johns, one of DC's most beloved writers, the issue really tells the story of a forgotten hero trying to make his way home; Wally West. A fan favorite character as both the original Kid Flash and later The Flash, this version of the character had been missing for years. The comic is told mostly from his perspective as he traverses the earth visiting his old friends trying to get back. Along the way, new storylines are set up, and the mystery behind the New 52 begins to reveal itself. Four separate artists worked on this issue, Gary Frank, Ethan Van Sciver, and Ivan Reis, and Phil Jimenez. Their work is all good and very similar. I say this, because the first time I read this I didn't notice. This comic is great, showcasing the best the DC Universe has to offer. The actual book is well made as well. Though I don't feel qualified to say this is a must read for DC Comics fans, it's definitely worth considering.5/5

This book is amazing! It takes place after Final Days of Superman storyline and is Wally West/Kid Flash-centric. Rebirth is a soft reboot that covers some plot holes in new 52, recaps Modern age stories while introduces new stories for the new Rebirth comic book runs. It bridges the gap amongst DC series and offers a nice easter egg of Watchmen which are the main focus in Doomsday Clock, in which you haven't read yet, has been a little slow in setting up but is good. I think everyone is ready for the big reveal of Dr. Manhattan facing off against the Justice League.

The Creation of Psychopharmacology

From Library Journal

The standard historical view of psychiatry claims that the invention of chlorpromazine (a.k.a. Thorazine) in 1952 ushered in biologically based "scientific" psychiatry. Healy (The Antidepressant Era) claims that earlier psychiatry was also scientifically based and had some notable successes, such as the treatment of catatonia with shock therapy. Healy's second theme is that because the success of psychiatric drugs, the choice of treatment options is largely dependent on the financial preferences of the pharmaceutical industry. For example, the author argues that "randomized controlled trials" of drugs are favored by the pharmaceutical industry because they allow products to be marketed to a wide audience, but what is desperately needed is more research on the effects of medications on more specific types of patients. While this theme has certainly been sounded before (T.R. Luhrmann's Of Two Minds is an accessible discussion of the pitfalls of drug-based psychiatry), the detailed history of the development of psychiatric drugs and the "culture" surrounding them makes this book unique. For academic libraries. Mary Ann Hughes, Neill P.L., Pullman, WACopyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

A remarkable view by someone who was there of the rise of modern psychopharmacology, with explanations of its progress as well as of missed opportunities due to pettiness by some and greed by others.

So glad I bought this. This is an outstanding review of "how drugs began" and the politics and economics surrounding the use of psychopharmacological agents. Ir's a great read!

Wonderful book!

You may remember David Healy's rise to headlines when a Canadian University fired him on his first day. He had committed the academic error of biting the hand that fed him by criticizing the pharmaceutical industry that funded his chair. This book is a critique of that industry regarding psychotropic drugs, and in particular the role of marketing and government regulations in that industry. Fascinating to read, though the chemical details were often a bit above my head, was the description of how copy-cat drugs are developed, and why claims for specificity are laughable hoaxes. The choice for calling some of these drugs antipsychotics and others antidepressants he calls a matter of historical accident. In fact, he says, in Japan, depression is treated with atypical antipsychotics, not SSRIs.Healy isn't coy about the horrific damage these drugs do, and the fact that doctors knew, or could have known, about it all along. It seems that doctors today are less, not more, aware of this harmfulness. The book includes interesting historical notes, though I was occasionally dismayed by Healy's naive acceptance of unlikely case scenarios recorded by early psychiatrists. For instance, he uncritically quotes that people were cured by chlorpromazine after having been in catatonic states, "frozen into several positions" for years. How is it likely, in the days before medical heroics, that someone survived such a condition? Healy does not question it. What caused catatonia, how did chlorpromazine relieve it, and why is the condition unknown today? Healy does not say. Yet he acknowledges the fraud of psychiatric diagnoses in more recent times, as well as the deception in drug company testing.Buried among the otherwise highly informative material is the odd statement that totally contradicts the rest of the book. For instance, Healy says about insulin coma therapy, "It... was used for twenty years... A therapy that did not produce some good would surely have faded away, given... the risk of fatalities." You would expect Healy to realize that medicine does not follow such logic, much less psychiatry. Furthermore, it did fade away, unlike the drugs which he criticizes. Equally baffling is his terse and unexplained claim for the efficacy of ECT. And though he himself coins the term "biobabble," he doesn't shirk from a bit of biobabble himself, such as "Brain imaging will make it clear that our brains are as social as they are biological and that being biological means having social arrangements stamped into our neuroendocrine systems."Among the implied advice that Healy includes in his book is the abolition of regulations, yet he comments that they cannot be abolished. Why not? He also endorses the free availability of SSRIs, so without a doctor's prescription. But why not free availability of all drugs, as he himself states (though he is not the first to do so), "The `good' drugs are now difficult to access because they are available only by prescription, while the `bad' drugs, which prescription-only status was introduced to control, are widely available."In short, Healy wrote an excellent book, though it contains the occasional slip which probably reflects a lack of critical editing.Copyright © MeTZelf

I'm embarrassed to say that I had not read this book until recently. I was aware that it existed and even had a copy laying around for over 3 years. Convergent events led me to read it and I must say that I found it particularly enjoyable. Readers will need to have more than a modicum of knowledge in several fields of science. Those that do will be rewarded with a book that is difficult to put down.My only criticism: The editing is poor. Someone with a better knowledge of punctuation needed to have reviewed this before publication. There are also more than a few sentence fragments, misspellings, and poor word choices. In the context of his otherwise thoughtful and clearly highly educated prose, these editorial errors stuck out like a sore thumb.

David Healy is probably the top historian of psychopharmacology in the last three years. He tells the story of the use of neuroleptics in treating schizophrenia that shows how the interests of certain parties (ie pharmaceutical companies and psychiatrists desperate to do something about horrendous and overcrowded conditions in state mental hospitcals) came to define the nature of psychopharmaceuticals and even the nature of schizophrenia - a pretty vaguely-defined illness - itself. Somehow, chlorpromazine went from being looked at as pretty similar as lobotomy, insulin therapy, or many of the other treatments previously used for schizophrenia, in the early 1950s, to being a magic bullet, saving schizophrenics from a lifetime of insanity without side effects, which is simply not the case.As the previous reviewer notes, Healy seems to give short shrift to some evidence. However, Healy's coming from the perspective of a historian of science - a discipline that tends to begin with a critical analysis and without starting from the viewpoint that science is king, but the viewpoint of a skeptic. To use the example of the previous reviewer, Healy's point when e talks about the withdrawal symptoms of SSRI's is partially to note that, when we talk about mental illness and that fuzzy boundary between the mental and the physical, there's a lot of flexibility in where that boundary is placed in the mind of the public. The concept of withdrawal itself *is* a very fluid, unscientific one: why some classes of drugs are considered to exhibit withdrawal effects while others dont is a highly politicized question - one whose answer lies more on the side of special interests and the state of american politics than real scientific evidence. one more note: the other major history of psychopharmacology to date is judith swazey's 1974 "chlorpromazine in psychiatry: a revolution in innovation." if you read swazey's book you can see why a critical history of psychopharmacology was desperately needed. this book balances the picture and serves as an excellent introduction to the history of psychopharmacology without being overly optimistic about medicine and progress.
