In particular, it gives good models for how to integrate the words of their interviewees with their own narrations. This method of letting the people speak in their own words is the newest form of narrative, as witnessed by the 2015 Nobel prize in Literature for Svetlana Alexievich.....

I am finding this textbook very useful for teaching college writers ways of researching, thinking, and writing about subcultures here in New York City. It's a useful guide to conducting onsite observations, interviews, interacting with new environments and cultures different to one's own. It offers lots of readings to supply examples of strategies--and good writing by professionals and students in the authors' classes---that my students can use in their writing. And the authors' discussions, along with their selections of writing, often raise authentic issues, ones that students have a real stake in. I use large bits and pieces, create my own units from the book in order to design a course, and in class I use this book along with other essays, fiction, film, poetry, visual art, music . . .

Excellent book! The exercises are really helpful to get you thinking about your own research project. It's very reader-friendly and not full of esoteric academic language.

John C. Wilkinson, D.Litt, is a former Reader at Oxford University and an Emeritus Fellow of St Hugh's College, Oxford, where he taught from 1969 until his retirement in 1997. Acclaimed biographer, Jean Fritz, was born in China to American missionaries on November 16, 1915. We used this book as part of our homeschool history lessons. It held all the kids' attention and they loved it. It is the American Revolution from the perspective of King George. It is a fairly quick read. The pictures are really comical, almost caricatures. My homeschooled kids who enjoyed this book are 4, 6, 8, 10, and 11 years old.

My daughter was assigned this book as one of her summer reading books. (She is in fourth grade.) She read through it rather quick so it seems good for her age group. This book takes a humorous approach to the historical facts, and the picture emphasize this. The book also speaks about King George as a child so the kids can relate.The Illustrations are definitely a plus and I overheard her explaining something funny in the book to her cousin, a sure sign of liking a book...I would recommend it to any kid around a 3rd grade reading level or above, especially if they have any interest in history. It is not overflowing with facts, so it may not be good for a report, but rather as a non-fiction reading book.

Most of our students know little about George III, so this is a valuable book in this set of unrevised history books. Students love this one!

Jean Fritz has done an excellent job once again of bringing historical characters to life! Great reading for any elementary student learning about America's Revolutionary War!

Quick good story, kept my daughter interested.

The DK Eyewitness series is, for my money, the best series of travel guides. The information is well organized, the maps are excellent, and the "where to stay," "where to dine," and "survival guide" features are very useful.But the photos are what make these invaluable resources. Your mind can form an image when you read "half timbered houses" or "Gothic cathedral" or "beautiful mountain drive" in a traditional guidebook, but the hundreds of photos in the DK Eyewitness books really give you a feel for what to expect and what's worth seeing.We were planning to spend almost all our vacation this summer in northern France and then make a quick spin to Belgium to see a few of the Bulge battlefields. After reviewing this book we've decided to spend a few more days in Belgium and take a real look at Luxembourg. The guidebook has already been useful.

I just came back from Belgium, and here are the pros and cons of this book. In general the tone was very impersonal and different from the Lonely Planets, which are my usual go-to travel guides. I would buy this as an additional reference to help you plan the trip, but would have a lighter more user-friendly one once I'm actually in Belgium.Pro:1) The pictures are beautiful and help you decide where to go.2) In-depth features (e.g. a lot of museums) are nice when you're visiting specific places.Cons:1) Maps are not always user friendly and need more detail. For example, when I was in Bruges, it was hard to navigate with the map because a lot of the small side streets are omitted and the layout of the city is not a straightforward grid system.2) It's sort of heavy if you plan on lugging it around.3) It's hard to cross-reference the restaurant/shop recommendations on the map and involves a lot of flipping back and forth.

These books are great! Only planned to spend a few days here so wanted a book that hit the highlights and was easy read and use.

Not great for actual travel, it is heavy to carry and doesn't have as much useful information as other guides. But because of all the pictures, it is a good choice to look at before you leave or when you get home to remember what you saw.

We had never found an Eyewitness Travel Guide that doesn't achieve the goal to educate the travel about the city that are going to visit including how to move inside the ciity, where to go, where to eat. Sadly we just spend few hours in the city and love to comeback and see all the places mentioned inside the guide.

I am 11 years old and I have been reading this series over and over for 4 years! However they are not a challenge or a deep read they are just clever and happy. I chose to write a review on this one because it is my favorite but that applies to all the books. I was lucky enough to have the author visit my school 2 years ago and he said some people don't like his books because they are not deep enough. As much as reading a deep and challenging story is important what is wrong with something light and funny once and a while. I think that reading is reading and these books will put a smile on your face and there is nothing wrong with that, not only that, they very clever and they have a true story line aside to being silly! I highly recommend for kids 7-12 (or any age above 12 if you eat to read a good laugh out loud story) :) :) :)

I was very excited when I got the package because my kids love this series and I wanted them to own the books instead of borrowing them. I loved the idea of gifting them a collectible boxed set to keep them neatly displayed and easy to find. Unfortunately I received 10 books inside an opened shrink wrap and no collectible box. I also noticed that the 10th book was different from what is pictured. It came with "old school" instead of "do it yourself book". So keep these things in mind. You may not get the collectible box for the boxed set and you may not get the same books as you expect. Disappointed.

I bought quite a few of these, because my grandson was enjoying some he had brought home from school. His mom has to limit the amount of time he spends reading them, as they change his behavior from good to not so good. I would not have bought them if I had known they would be causing a problem.

My 6 year old son began reading "Wimpy Kid" books just as he was learning to read. Many times I would allow him to read before bed and would hear him laughing hysterically in his room. Now, 7 years old, he has read all of them and often will pick them up and read them again. They are silly, but the appeal to his age demographic was actually amazing to me. I didn't have to make him read... he wanted to read. And he loved them all. I would recommend the entire series to any parent of a child who is learning and becoming comfortable with reading comprehension.

This particular purchase was a gift for a friends son, but I still have my 12 year olds sons book from 4 years ago. It's full of stories to be completed by your child and so funny to look back on when they're older. The hardback is very durable, has held up through a crazy (now 12 years old, as the photo shows:) ) boys toting it around and a move. I'll be holding on to this forever.

The books are great for my older son who just finished first grade. He got into this series at the beginning of the summer and I got him this set to bring to our summer travels. He went through them all in no time. But in the days that they lasted, they kept my son well entertained. I also dipped into the pages and like them. My brother-in-law picked up one and couldn't put it down. We saw the series on display in Portuguese supermarkets and German bookstores and met other kids who read the German version of them. The wide and ageless appeal of these books is self-evident.​

I started purchasing this authors books for my 7 year old granddaughter. This was my 2nd purchase from the group. She has really gotten to become an avid reader because not only can she learn to grow in a most positive way but they make it easy for her to relate to other kids and the importance of kindness and compassion for those that might be different. Much easier because the information is coming from a place of their choice. The "Best" part is there are hundreds to purchase and help with their growth process and they can be passed down.

I'll be honest with you: I found the last couple of Wimpy Kids books to be underwhelming, so I wasn't sure what I expected from yet another entry. Luckily, to my surprise, the gags proved funny consistently throughout the book, making this one of my favorite entries in the series.As with many other books in the series, it takes a while for the actual plot to surface. But that's fine--the gags that open the book are quite amusing. And once the plot does surface, it proves to be an interesting one. Greg wants to go to a dance, but he has to find a date, so he has roped his friend Rowley into helping him. The drastic measures he's willing to take to get a girl's attention prove quite amusing.One thing that really made this stand out from the other books in the series is that I really felt myself sympathizing with Greg. Sure, he's no angel, but he isn't as callous as he's been in the previous books. His amazing strokes of bad luck made me pity him.By the way, one point of caution: if your kids seriously still believe that storks deliver babies, then don't get them this book. Greg talks about what it was like to be inside his mother's tummy.Oh, and by the way, a 23-year-old is writing this review, so the book can be a fun, lighthearted read for adults as well.
