Indeed, in 2008 he was named the richest man on earth.The book chronicles his philosophy of business and many of his quirks - he favours Coke over wine and burgers and steaks over almost any other type of food - and delves into numerous accounts of his investments which have spanned cocoa-beans, textile mills, Wall Street investment banks, and railroads, among many others.Buffett comes across as an almost asocial machine constantly sifting through businesses to find the best bargains to invest in. That said, he does change over the course of his life in some respects and the book does a good job of describing it, showing, for example, how he was persuaded to be more generous towards his children, and describing the way he went from believing that his greatest service to humanity was through amassing a huge fortune to believing that giving money away sooner was preferable.If this book has a limitation it is that it shies away from offering a more definitive interpretation of its subject that would aid the reader in coming to a deeper understanding of the real Warren Buffett. The book offers an account of the complete Buffett mythology: his folksy, Midwestern values, his common-sense voice, his sage wisdom about business. It reinforces his philosophy of investing in undervalued companies with excellent long-term prospects, his injunction, via Graham, to “be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful.” It charts his growing fame, his circus-like shareholder meetings, his numerous appearances in the business press and on business TV networks, his love for Cherry Coke and Gorat’s steakhouse. And while the mythology is probed and dissected in some ways - yes, he’s lived in the same house since 1958 but Schroeder points out that he has remodeled it since then - I don’t think the reader will come away from this book with a true understanding of what’s driving him, at least not with a view or interpretation of this that has the endorsement and exposition of the author.If I had to take a guess, the primary influence on Buffett seems to be his father, Howard Buffett, a stock broker from Omaha whose civic values led him to Washington D.C. where he served in Congress during Warren’s youth. His mix of patriotism and business seems to have greatly influenced his son whom he took on a visit to the New York Stock Exchange in 1940 at the age of ten. Buffett says he wanted money so he could be “independent” and didn’t like to do manual labor but so do lots of us and he didn’t stop making money once he’d become independent so there is clearly more to it than that. It’s this sort of reading of Buffett I wish there was more of in this book.The book is nonetheless filled with as much superficial detail as you could want about Buffett. At 816 pages there’s tons of information about his whole life and world, it perfectly captures Buffett’s voice, as well as separate accounts of many important times in his life from the perspective of his family and friends. Schroeder has written a good valuation report style biography of the man and I suppose in many ways that’s the type of biography most suited to this life.

I had to read the book because I work for Berkshire Hathaway and I had to understand our founder and what he stood for. I find a lot of parallels in the thinking of the great minds of incredibly brilliant people. This is a great American Dream success story but Warren Buffet takes very little credit for his success. He credits the success of his luck "the ovarian lottery" as he calls it, being born in America first, and then all the other possibilities that came to him by "luck". I see an incredible genius who was not afraid to follow his heart, take chances, and put in the hard work. I see a brilliant mind always thirsty for knowledge and growth but able to keep his feet planted on the ground. I see a human struggling for balance in life between what we want and can achieve and those we love. I see a man who cared and gave back and was not afraid to walk his own walk.

I like the book. It is long though and has many events that I didn't know about Mr. Buffett. I read a lot of things about Buffett and it was nice to learn more about him. It is always interesting to me to learn about this incredible investor and to learn that like us, he has his faults just like the rest of us.

I love this book however the condensed version is missing the freshness and honesty of the first publication. Reads almost the same if you want the big picture, but the parts removed revealed the personality, fragility and humanness of Mr. Buffett and his family. Like many others' sentiments, this is a man I would like to meet.

Rating: 3.5I liked this book way better than I liked the first one in the series. Fabian and his brothers along with Atticus and BB made much better characters than Raven and his five mates. I also found the plot of this book more interesting. Some parts of the story were way over the top, but all in all, I really enjoyed it. I don't think you need to read the first one in the series to enjoy this one as it is about a whole new set of characters from the first book. Also, while this didn't end in a cliffhanger per se, it did leave a major event unresolved.

Always love a Maggie Walsh book, this book did not disappoint. Wonderful story full of intreague, love and a happy ending. A good HEA book.

I have to say this was touching, sexy and had some moments that made me laugh. Great second book, three should be amazing!Loving this series but now I'm left hanging, waiting for more!!Can always count on a Maggie Walsh book to make my day better

Sad to say, but this book turned out to be one of diminishing returns. Manguel is a clear lover of books and libraries, and he researched intriguing stories about various libraries, their development, their architecture, their necessity, their maps of the human mind. But just like another book I read a few years back that tried to address the joys and magic of reading and books, I found Manguel's ideas interesting but not world-shifting. This book certainly deserves its praise, for his efforts are clearly heartfelt and thorough, but I must admit that I find the overall tone a little one-note. Thus, the trend of categories through which he studies the concept of the library (as memory, as shadow, as shape, as oblivion) less and less surprising and thus less and less engaging. Perhaps some left-turns and even more self-doubt or -criticism might have taken this into more compelling directions.

As a writer and researcher I have been privileged to use several of the Libraries mentioned in this useful and highly entertaining volume. In addition I have accumulated several small libraries of my own over the years as my interests changed and developed. First aviation and electronics, then photography and art. Then the photography and art had to be sold to make way for early Buddhist works in English, then much of that left so that I could accumulate everything I could find on early forms of hands on healing from Aesculapius to Mesmer and current forms. Now my largest collection covers birds and birding.I seem to have become addicted to libraries!The Library at Night is a fine, fine book, full of tales of libraries and books by a man who loves both and writes about them beautifully.A true delight to read.Richard, Sausalito

I loved this book. The author captures the essence and passion of all of us who love books. I am not talking just of people who read, but of those of us who have books all over the house and are reluctant to part with any of them. Please,if you walk into a library and cannot decide where to start; if you go into a bookstore to buy A book and come out several hours later with a bag full; if you are late to work because you picked up a book and lost track of time then I encourage you to read this book.

I must preface this review by saying that, 1) I am an avid book collector and reader, and 2) I tend to prowl around the house (and my library in particular) late at night after the family are all asleep.I can't imagine anyone who has grown, or dreams of growing, a personal library not loving this book. It's like sitting and chatting with a wise, engaging friend about a mutual love of books and libraries. Manguel writes the words, I speak them in my head, but they feel like they came right out of my own heart. I won't try to describe these essays in any detail. I know I will read them again and again and they will never grow stale. Suffice it to say that, when it comes to books about books, it may not be possible to beat "The Library at Night".

While not a history or philosophy text, the reader will find plenty of both in this collection of essays about libraries. The author begins with his own library, its building and organization, then expands to include musings on a variety of topics related to libraries and book collections. The author's grasp of multiple languages reflects his own cosmopolitan leanings, which he advocates for all.

A beautiful book for book lovers. For me the perfect book for reading in bed before falling asleep. I learn some things, I am immersed in interesting thought and ideas, but without any tension. Just right for the time before sleep.

This is a book for the person who thinks a book is a necessary tool to greater knowledge. Without it one's library isn't full.You can go into it wherever you choose and learn from the experience. And loving every minute of it! I envy the person who has this book to look forward to.

This book is an empowering read for middle school children and this middle-aged mom. I am reading it to my two sons: ages 12 and 14. Each chapter "ignites" conversation and self reflection to depths I usually find it impossible to reach two young men as their mother. I, too, find the relatable success stories and quizzes we discover reading here to make me think about personal traits and intentional choices I can still make to enrich and feel more in control of my OWN life. Would recommend this book across the age spectrum; I have found it to be a great bonding tool and barrier eliminator with my children. Invest in this one fellow Tween/ teen Moms; it will not disappoint.

I bought this book for my 10-year-old daughter who is very insecure due to her Dad's and I divorce. As beautiful as she is, she has very low self esteem and doesn't always believe in herself. I saw this book and just knew it would be the thing to ignite her and her confidence! We read the book together at night so we can highlight, take notes and discuss. I have loved seeing my daughter become more self aware and confident in who she is just through spending this quality time together reading a book that speaks directly to her. Patricia hit the nail on the head with this book and I'm forever grateful.

This is a must read for every pre-teen, teen and college student. I have recommended it to so many of my friends with kids. I read it and I am 47 years old and it ignited a spark in me. It started my wheels turning of new opportunities that are still available to me and where can I start? I wish I had this book when I was growing up because I am inspired with all the stories. An absolute must read!

I have recommended this book to several pre-teens, including my own grand daughter. The book provides a path for interaction w/ parents and pre-teens and dialogue that can offer a search for new opportunities for pre-teens. I also purchased extra copies and took them to various middle school and elementary schools in our city. The school counselors were very receptive, More of this type of reading for pre-teens is much needed as they are faced with so many challenges, "Ignite" gives direction to meet these challenges & look beyond for new opportunities .

I bought this book for my soon to be 13 year old son. He doesn't like to read much but he will sit down willingly at night and read a chapter or 2. He is engaged in the book and actually takes the quizzes and does the activities at the end of the chapters!! I would recommend this to anyone who has an adolescent who needs help in finding their way through this time in their life!

This book has been a wonderful resource to me and the teens I work with. I love the interactive quizzes the kids take each week. It gets them engaged in the topic at a personal level. I would recommend this book for teens to read on their own or in a group study setting! This is perfect for leadership development and mentorship programs in schools, community centers, libraries, and youth groups.

I highly recommend purchasing this book for your adolescent. It is a great book to have around the house so that a young person can read and re-read it whenever situations present themselves. That said, it is a must-have for any school that serves adolescents. The book assists students in self-reflection, points them in a positive direction, ans assists them in making good choices.
