The Immunization Decision: A Guide for Parents (The Family health series), by Randall Neustaedter

From Library Journal

Neustaedter for the most part is against routine immunization. His book is intended to provide parents with information about childhood diseases, vaccines, and safety and legal requirements so they don't just "blindly accept the opinions of doctors." However, there are many national, state, and local laws that make some immunizations mandatory, whether parents like it or not. Still, this book helps inform parents about the subject, and public libraries should consider it for purchase as alternative, often controversial reading on this important topic.- Barbara J. Set the Boy Free: The Autobiography, by Johnny Marr

Review

“The preeminent guitar stylist of his generation. Glam, folk-rock, post-punk, funk, rockabilly, and a certain ineffable Marrness— that ringing, swinging, intricate, atmospheric, hook-dripping soul— all dovetailed into a sound that still stuns.” (Pitchfork)

From the Back Cover

Johnny Marr was born in 1960s Manchester to Irish emigrant parents and knew from an early age that he would be a musician. Forming his first band at thirteen, Marr spent his teenage years in public housing, playing guitar, devouring pop culture, and inventing his own musical style. It wasn’t until the early eighties, when Marr turned up on the doorstep of a singer named Steven Patrick Morrissey, that both a unique songwriting partnership and the group recognized as one of the most iconic bands of all time were formed. In 1983, The Smiths released their first single, and within a year their eponymous debut album reached number two in the UK chart, paving the way for mainstream and critical success on their own terms. Fame in America, where The Smiths were beloved by fans desperate for a musical alternative to the power rock dominating the airwaves. For Marr, tensions within the band and desire for a wider musical scope led to his departure from The Smiths in 1987, ensuring the end of one of the most influential British groups ever. But the end of The Smiths was just the beginning for Marr. Set the Boy Free explores a musical journey that has spanned decades, styles, and genres—from forming Electronic with Bernard Sumner of New Order and then The Healers, to playing with Bryan Ferry, Talking Heads, Pet Shop Boys, Billy Bragg, Nile Rodgers, The Pretenders, The The, Modest Mouse, and The Cribs to collaborating with Hans Zimmer and receiving acclaim and worldwide success in his own right as a solo artist, Marr has never stopped making captivating music. Here, for the first time, he tells his own side of the story. From roaming the streets of Manchester to constantly pushing musical boundaries as a true icon and one of the most revered guitarists in the world, Set the Boy Free is a memoir that fans have been clamoring for, and one that will share the history of a band, and a man who has followed his dream and made himself a legend.

I bought this book with the intention of just reading the chapters about The Smiths, which is less than half of the book. Don't do that. On one hand, yes, Johnny tells about the details how the Smiths was formed, when he met Morrissey, how many of their songs came to life, the tough days at the end, etc. They have been my favorite band for years. On the other hand, as you keep reading, something else emerges: the man himself. Johnny Marr as a deeply humble, grateful, aware, loyal friend, and funny human being. His stories when he met Keith Richards, when he played with Paul McCartney, Electronic, Pet Shop Boys, The The, Pretenders, Modest Mouse... when he met the Gallagher's. And even the Dalai Lama! I couldn't put this book down: I have learned so much about him and his bands, I have discovered new music, and I have laughed out loud many times. And yes, I have ended up loving his music even more.

This book thrilled me from cover to cover, and I especially liked reading about Johnny's life before he became famous. There were moments described in this book involving Johnny Marr as a boy and as a teenager which were so suspenseful to read at times that I almost forgot life eventually worked out very well for Johnny Marr, and found myself worried and cheering for young Johnny to make it and become the widely celebrated musician that he is. His highly detailed chapters on The Smiths in this book will, no doubt, be very enlightening to those, who like me, are fans of that band. I'm actually listening to The Smiths in a slightly new and interesting light after reading Johnny's book. It was also really exciting to read about Johnny's journey since the Smith's, and reading Johnny's thoughts about certain hardships he faced gave me a useful new perspective with which to view similar events in my life. I miss reading Johnny now that I've finished this book. He made me laugh at times and made me tearful at others, and if years from now he writes a sequel to this, I'll read it for sure.

The most accurate barometer for how good of a read a book has been is when the number of pages in your right hand begins to thin and you realize the story is coming to a close. I really enjoyed "Set The Boy Free" and discovering the details of Johnny's home life with his young parents playing cool pop music in the house during his youth. Johnny describes the magic that he felt after sitting with Moz for the first time at 19, playing guitar while discussing their influences, and the subsequent formation of the band. Johnny captures the time and culture of Manchester, and the London music scene perfectly: it is still hard to believe that Johnny was only 23 when the Smiths broke-up. I was lucky enough to see the Smiths twice, and they were both amazing shows. The funniest scene in the book is his describing "Mr.Haircut" when he first begins his friendship with Haircut's brother. A superb autobiography of one of my many musical influences.

Marr was 50% of the magic that was The Smiths. Perhaps more? His recent solo work is also very good as well. Either way, I truly enjoyed this book. Gave some great insight of his career and just had a nice gentle positive vibe through out the book. I couldn't put it down at times, which is a great feeling! I also read Morrissey's book when it came out, who I adore and found that one to just to be negative unfortunately and not too might insight that a music fan wants to know.

This is a typical autobiography, starting from Johnny's parents and goes until today. The story includes a comprehensive description of every single musician Johnny Marr ever ran into, spoke to, played guitar with, or met at a party. If you are a hard-core Smiths fan and have read Morrissey's autobiography, and Morrissey and Marr: The Severed Alliance, you get three versions of the same breakup story. Morrissey was hurt and broken, Johnny was freed from his multitasking. The lawsuit concerning the earnings of the Smiths being divided unfairly between the members was described by Johnny as just a minor bump in the road, but Morrissey turned it into a personal drama of epic proportions. A more neutral version is in The Severed Alliance. I would have liked to read more about his wife Angie, who had to put up with his drugs, drinking, car wrecks, being away from home. I would also have liked to learn more about his kids because I have kids around the same age.Overall it's a good book, but sadly, Johnny cannot write like Morrissey. It's like a crayon drawing compared to an oil painting.

About half the book covers his upbringing from the time he got his first guitar to the end of The Smiths. The other half covers all the other bands and projects he's been a part of, including those intersecting points when The Smiths came back into his life eg., talking to Morrissey, reuniting with Andy, the trial, etc. The common thread throughout the book is love of music and family/friends. His passion comes through. It was hard not to love every last word. I'm a huge Smiths and Electronic fan and he is my favorite guitarist, so my opinion is totally subjective. The book is written as well as he plays the guitar. Certainly not as innovative and colorful, but the craftsmanship is there. On a final note, if you're expecting any new revelations about why The Smiths broke up, I'm not sure you'll find it here more so than any other recounting of the breakup. Sadly, it only confirms that Johnny was in a really overwhelming time in his life when too little communication with his band mates spiraled uncontrollably. The boys just didn't have the maturity and experience to deal with it. In that respect, the book is a tragedy, but his life after The Smiths is his ongoing celebration of music.

I'm a guitar player and songwriter so this was a very enjoyable read.No sex, no drug stories, and absolutely not needed.Johnny Marr is in my top 5 guitar players of all-time, so it was great to get his insight on how he wrote some of these great songs.THE THE is my favorite of all the band's he's been in, so those chapters I relished.
