So begins a remarkable study of the changing views of private property throughout American history. The dynamic tension is between land health, in the Leopoldian sense, and unfettered freedom. Freyfogle explores the major common law doctrines dealing with private property, as well as evolving statute law. Interwoven throughout the book are reviews of relevant Supreme Court cases. Landowner rights are seen as a "bundle" of rights that are subject to change as societal priorities shift. Although the book is fundamentally about law, it does not at all read like a legal brief. It is a very engaging read. Freyfogle reviews in detail the "tragedy of the commons", contrasting it with his own "tragedy of fragmentation." The two prophets that serve as his muses are Aldo Leopold and Wendell Berry. It is clear that we are going to have to rethink property law issues as we begin to face the limits of our growth. This is the best historical review of the institution of private property in the US that I have read. Unlike many scholarly books, it is written in very clear prose without a lot of technical jargon (at least, what technical jargon is deployed is explained). Highly recommended. Holds up to multiple readings. Very relevant to many current land-use debates. I appreciate also - even if I do not share - his optimism. One can only hope he is right and that we can manage to foster a better social stewardship of the land.

I found the book very extensive in the information and teaching of specific skills. It is easy to follow and understand. The photographs look exactly like the iPad screen, and the steps to complete a particular task are numbered in order. In addition there are tips about different gestures and how to use them. Each chapter is outlined with every topic of the chapter in order. I would recommend this book to all first time iPad users, and to more advanced users as a reference book.

Author Guy Hart-Davis has been around for a while and has authored six other “Teach Yourself VISUALLY” guides. This is a very thorough and workmanlike guide to using iOS 11 (and some earlier versions) on most iPad models. Because of the way iin which Apple evolves the iOS operating system, not all the features in iOS 11 are available on all iPad models. In 12 chapters and dozens of topics, Guy-Hart pretty much covers the waterfront o what you can do with your iPad and how. Copiously illustrated and very well-written, each topic gets a one or to page treatment. In many ways, this is the instruction manual Apple should have published. They sort of did in their extensive Help system, but this format is far more accessible. Yes, you can get every bit of information contained in this book by searching the internet, but as noted above, the information is far more accessible here. I consider this both a basic user’s manual detailing virtually every operation you can undertake on an iPad and as a reference manual. A very nice piece of work, indeed.Jerry

Like other "Teach Yourself Visually" books, this book is heavy on graphics and light on words, with a typical page being a screenshot with lots of annotations - you really do get a sense of what you see on your screen as you want to do something and can pretty easily figure it out by reading annotations - a good and powerful approach to most of the basic tasks on the Mac.For somebody pretty new to a iPad (or maybe someone who hasn't used some of its functions), the book will be very helpful. It probably is not for a more experienced user, though could serve as a good reference.It is well organized across different tasks (e.g., working with music files) and has a good table of contents and index (both of which can be seen here on Amazon).Recommended, especially for someone new to an iPad.

This was not supposed to show fingerprints but it shows everyone of them. I would not buy it again because that was the selling point for me.

It's probably just me. Maybe these stories, essays, etc will be of help to some people. I just hated them. Having just lost my son, they did not help with my grief but seemed to exacerbate it. Again, it's probably just me and where my head is at. I threw the book away and will be staying away from these books for now.

As a recent widow, this book just made me sadder. So much loss, so many sad stories. I suppose seeing how people have carried on would help some grievers, but it just makes me more melancholy to think that I have to carry on without my sweetheart by my side. Oddly enough, I recently met the husband of one of the people profiled in the book, and that was a bit of a shocker. I didn't expect to see their story of loss in this book.

This is a really-really nice book! I give these books to people who have lost loved ones, and they really find comfort reading them.

I am not a 'chicken soup for the soul' fan. However, this book was given to me after my mother passed and it was one of the best books to help me through her passing. I have since bought it for a friend of mine who just lost a parent. She also claimed it has helped her too. The reason this book is good is because it deals with real stories about people going through the same process. Unlike most books about grief which tell you how you'll feel or that it is okay to feel a certain way and then explain the process of grief, this book offered uplifting, and comforting stories.

A major tear jerker. But a pleasant read. Although I wish more stories didn't involve grieving during Christmas. Felt like that was the subject of the book and I didn't like it much because not everyone grieves then and most importantly not everyone celebrates it. I don't know. Just my own opinion.

I bought this book for my best friend's (since we were 5 years old, we are 30 now)little brother who is 15 years old.In June 2008 we had a horrific thing happen to our family, our beautiful sister, daughter, cousin, freind, and aunt was hit and killed by a drunk driver on a motorcycle who was 3 times over the legal limit and racing another motorcyle (who was not injured in the accident),Our Sweet ANGEL was only 17 when she was taken from us.There is a specific story in the book that talks about "water bugs" and "dragonflies" that we can all read and instantly think of our beautiful angel, who had been taken from us in such a tragic way.I recommend this book to anyone who has suffered the pain of a loved one or freind, even if the loss was not tragic, the loss itself is the tragady and this book will help somewhat how to cope with that loss.There is nothing we wouldn't give, do, sell, buy, whatever to have her back. The reality sadley is that she is not coming back, she is gone....I know that when you think of a loved one your eyes fill with tears, but I also know that when you think about the one you lost, it is ok to smile and laugh when remembering times with them, if you don't it makes it seem as if they caused sadness, or sorrow but it is the complete opposite in fact, all they brought was unconditional love, kindness, warmth, joy, happiness, and that is just a few of many things.Please don't get me wrong it is good to cry when remembering your loved one but you should also smile every now and then when you think of them and the happiness they had brought to your life as well as each persons life they touched while they were still here. And know you will indeed see them again one day. I hope that this book has helped your family as it has for mine.
