I bought this book after reading The Restless Wave because I liked how it was written plus all the fascinating people he knew and met. So this book, Character is Destiny is thought-provoking and stimulating; so many, many fabulous people!!The stories are short enough to give the reader a good overview of the person. It caused me to continue to research many of them to know more, to look for more books about them.I highly recommend this book. It would have been one we would have read together as a family if I had obtained it years ago.It is a great book for homeschooling families. It would be excellent to use in conjunction with other curriculum that reinforces positive character traits.

These are wonderful glimpses into a number and variety of people who, in their own ways, have contributed to the well-being of the nations. Well written and certainly appropriate to these times, it gives one hope for the world.

About the Author

Jeffrey C. Carrier, Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus of Biology at Albion College (MI) where he was a faculty member from 1979 to 2010. He earned a B.S. in Biology in 1970 from the University of Miami and completed a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Miami in 1974. While at Albion College, Dr. Carrier received multiple awards for teaching and scholarship and held Endowed Professorships in Biology. His primary research interests center on various aspects of the physiology and ecology of nurse sharks in the Florida Keys. His most recent work investigated the reproductive biology and mating behaviors of this species in a long-term study from an isolated region of the Florida Keys. Carrier’s projects with acoustic telemetry, animal-borne video, ultrasound and endoscopy, and BRUVs drives his interest in applications of technology to the study of the biology of sharks and their relatives. Dr. Carrier has been a long-time member of the American Elasmobranch Society, the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, Sigma Xi, the Society for Animal Behavior, and the Council on Undergraduate Research. He served multiple terms as President of the American Elasmobranch Society and received several distinguished service awards from the society. He holds an appointment as an Adjunct Research Scientist with Mote Marine Laboratory’s Center for Shark Research. In addition to his publications in the scientific literature, he has written and edited five previously published books on sharks and their biology. Michael R. Heithaus, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences & Education at Florida International University in Miami, FL where he has been a faculty member since 2003. He received his B.A. in Biology from Oberlin College (1995) in Ohio and his Ph.D. from Simon Fraser University (2001) in British Columbia, Canada. He was a postdoctoral scientist and staff scientist at the Center for Shark Research and also served as a research fellow at the National Geographic Society’s Remote Imaging Department. At FIU, Dr. Heithaus served as the Director of the Marine Sciences Program before becoming the Director of the School of Environment, Arts, and Society. Dr. Heithaus is a behavioral and community ecologist. His main research interests are in understanding the ecological roles and importance of large predators, especially their potential to impact community structure through non-consumptive effects. His work also explores the factors influencing behavioral decisions, especially of large marine taxa including marine mammals, sharks and rays, and sea turtles, and the importance of individual variation in behavior in shaping ecological interactions. Dr. Heithaus’ is the co-lead of the Global FinPrint project - a world-wide survey of elasmobranchs on coral reefs. His lab is engaged in marine conservation and research projects around the world and has ongoing long-term projects in Shark Bay, Australia and the coastal Everglades of southwest Florida. Colin Simpfendorfer, PhD, is a Professor in the College of Science and Engineering at James Cook University (Queensland, Australia), and currently serves as the Associate Dean Research. He has also worked at in the Center for Shark Research at Mote Marine Laboratory (Florida) and the Shark Fisheries Section of the Western Australian Department of Fisheries (Perth, Australia). He received his BSc. (Marine Biology and Zoology) in 1986, and Ph.D. (Fisheries Science) in 1993, both from James Cook University. He has spent his career studying the life history, ecology, status and conservation of sharks and rays with the principle aim of providing scientific information for improving their management. He regularly provides scientific advice to governments, NGOs and industry. He has been at the forefront of applying new technology and approaches to sharks and rays, including early work on the analysis of acoustic telemetry data, using eDNA as a means of surveying for critically endangered sawfish, and is principle investigator for the Global Finprint project surveying sharks and rays on coral reefs globally. Dr Simpfendorfer is an author on over 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers on sharks and rays, and has trained more than 30 MSc and Ph.D. students (some of which have authored or co-authored chapters in this book). He is currently the Co-Chair of the IUCN Shark Specialist Group which works to improve the conservation status of this important group of ocean predators through assessing their status, developing conservation plans and delivering quality scientific information to decision makers. He also serves on Australia’s national Threatened Species Scientific Committee.

Many text series for teaching French make the mistake of presenting everything (grammar explanations also) in the target language. Discovering French presents grammar explanations in English, rendering this more student-friendly. The ladder of language acquisition is also obvious to the student as well as the teacher; this is a good thing. Authentic French is not so overdone that the student feels swamped with new structures; the level of difficulty increases with instruction. These features make for a usable French program!

Shipping took longer than I anticipated but it wasn't really a problem for this purchase because this is an extra book for us to keep at home for private lessons. The book was in excellent condition. Cover was in great shape and no writing/highlighting on pages. Would order from this seller again but will allow for longer delivery time.

I have recently embarked upon a little personal journey to become at least passably literate in the basics of as many of the world religions as I can, and therefore have sought out several books that describe the foundational principles of each. In my quest to understand Shintoism I chose this book first, and then read several others. I found this to be the clearest and most easily understandable to the Western reader. I trust the credentials of the author as giving him the tools with which to write such a work for an international audience as well. I found several very valuable insights from the belief system itself as well. Highly recommend.

I chose this book as part of a research effort to understand how the Toyota Production System (TPS) was influenced by societal aspects found in Japan. One thing that is "uniquely Japanese" is Shintoism, and so a working hypothesis was that it provided unconscious bias ("intuition") in how this manufacturing system was created and refined. This book provides a wealth of tantalizing clues useful in my study, and hope that there is enough commentary here to be useful to others seeking to satisfy curiosity or other forms of knowledge/enlightenment.Pro:+ This book, to the novice that I am, appears complete enough to be called "The Essence of Shinto"+ Complete, yet relative short and to the point+ Corrects the view that Shinto is a religion, rather it is better described as a value system that reveres "the Great Nature"+ Well written and easy to understand... with a better translation into English than other Japanese texts I have read+ Contains some interesting statements that might explain motivations behind "taking a long view" in cellular manufacturing: cell shape, 5s systems, kaizen, hansei, and "Ohno Circle" as well as why despite strong beliefs in standardization why separate factories often do not share these standards+ Also helped me explain why additional TPS-like systems are not emerging from Japan... one important element, Shintoism, is in rapid decline, making the philosopher approach less and less likely as time moves forward+ Makes some links to Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism which help one understand what Shintoism is, and how it is changingCon:- There is a lot of unique Japanese jargon which make it harder to follow at times, which may be unavoidable in this subject matter- The author is somewhat enamored with the subject matter, making him perhaps less objective, especially when making comparisons to Western religionsNeutral:> Although perhaps out of scope, some additional detail on Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism influences on shintoism would have been warmly welcomedBottom line: I would recommend this to any novice that wants to explore Shinto and for any others seeking deeper understanding of TPS.

It is explained well and is easy to understand.Good starting point, if you want to understand Shinto and gives some excellent insight into the Japanese way of thinking.Very well written and information.

Great book , well written I took it out from the library and had to have a copy for myself. Very informative- think about what nature is both Japanese idea and how it is applicable today- reverence.

This is wonderful short book on Shinto, which well represents the very cultural soul of Japan, even in these horrid "modern" times in which we live, and which must be understood so as to enable one to grasp some notion, even if a limited one, of the same.Written by the 75th successor of family lineage within Shinto and providing a personal expression of that one's understanding and thoughts, for which this one is greatful and feels honored to have been allowed to hear/read the same, the perspective is as if one is receiveing guidance from one's beloved uncle or grandfather.This book is Shinto.This book does not teach one the ritual practices of Shinto, which must be lived to be so learned, however, this one speaks to the spirit and impotance of Shinto.namaste

This book concentrates primarily on the customer service aspect of the Nordstrom Store. It emphasized that this is not a store for everyone, but for a select few with the right customer service attitude and willingness to work hard, that success would be theirs. Along the way it tells how the founders of the company got their start and follows the development of Seattle and its connection to the gold rush of the 1900's and the gateway to trade with the Orient as an economic supplier of jobs and business growth. The policy of inventory carried in depth led to great customer satisfaction by always being in stock on in demand items. The family of young brothers and their personal interest in customer service and close relationships with employees contributed greatly to the success of the company. Employees were encouraged to act in the best interest of their customers with the promise that management would support their actions, at least once. From a historical point, it is an interesting chronology of a very successful regional department stores. It all began with shoes and has progressed from their into a store with great customer loyalty and employee dedication to serving the customer well. A GOOD COMBINATION FOR SUCCESS.

This is a good book and tells a neat story. As I read it I got the feeling that it was written shortly after the companies big fight with the union (Nordstrom won). So, the last section of the book is all about that and Nordstrom's view. At that point the book comes across as propaganda and not so much about "the Nordstom way" Still, up to that point it was good.And when I took the Duck tour in Seattle (its a local tour thing) I was able to answer the question the tour guide gave, "Who was one of the only people to make money from the Alaska gold rush?" of course, Nordstrom.
