John McCain A Proud Tradition John Sidney McCain III, known as Johnny, was a navy kid from day one. He was born on August 29, 1936, to Roberta and John Sidney McCain Jr., in the hospital at Coco Solo Naval Air Station in the Panama Canal Zone. Johnny’s father, called Jack, was assigned to a submarine stationed at Coco Solo. His grandfather, John Sidney McCain Sr. was the base commander there. Base Commander McCain, nicknamed “Slew,” doted on his new grandson. A photo of Johnny and his father and grandfather at Johnny’s christening shows Jack looking serious. But Johnny’s grandfather is grinning from ear to ear as he cradles his tiny grandson in his arms. Commander McCain was even glad to babysit Johnny. One night, going out to a party, Roberta McCain instructed her father-in-law to let the baby cry in his crib. Returning home, she was shocked to discover that Grandfather McCain had instead taken little Johnny to bed with him. “Dammit, Roberta,” he tried to explain himself, “that boy has the stamp of nobility on his brow.” Johnny’s parents weren’t so sure, especially as Johnny became a toddler. He had fits of temper, often becoming so angry that he held his breath until he fainted. His parents were worried, but the family doctor advised them to dunk the little boy in a tub of cold water each time a tantrum began. This treatment seemed to cure Johnny’s temper fits. A few months after Johnny’s birth, his family—his father, his mother, and his older sister, Jean (called Sandy)—moved to New London, Connecticut. Jack McCain had been assigned to the submarine command headquarters there. This would be only the first of Johnny McCain’s many moves with his family as they followed Jack to various naval posts around the country. In 1939 the McCains moved to San Diego, California, where Jack had been appointed commander of the Naval Air Station. Only two years later, in April 1941, they were back in New London. One Sunday toward the end of that year, five-year-old Johnny and his family happened to be standing in their front yard. A naval officer pulled his car up in front of the McCains’ house and shouted to Johnny’s father. “Jack! The Japanese have bombed Pearl Harbor!” It was December 7, 1941. Jack McCain left immediately for the base. The next day President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan. Soon afterward, Nazi Germany declared war on the United States. The United States entered World War II, and Johnny hardly saw his father during the next four years. Fortunately, Roberta McCain was perfectly capable of running the family, which now included Johnny’s brother, Joseph, born in 1942, by herself. A lively, enthusiastic woman, Roberta loved navy life. She was always interested in new places and experiences, and she made new friends easily. Roberta had grown up in California as the daughter of wealthy oilman Archibald Wright and his wife, Myrtle. But she didn’t mind making do on her husband’s small salary as a naval officer, and she treated their frequent moves as chances for adventure. In fact, her marriage to Jack McCain had begun as an adventure, when at the age of twenty she’d married him against her family’s wishes, eloping with him to Tijuana, Mexico. Although Johnny seldom saw his father or grandfather during the war years, they were important figures in his life. Sometimes his mother would wake him up in the middle of the night to see his grandfather, stopping by on his way to his next assignment. Johnny was always delighted to see Grandfather McCain, a lively, fun-loving man. The two had had a special bond ever since Johnny was a baby in Panama, when the tough, chain-smoking naval commander babysat for him. Johnny McCain learned as a young boy that a career in the navy was the best life—the only possible life—for a McCain man. His grandfather, who grew up on a plantation in Carroll County, Mississippi, had graduated from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, in 1906. Slew McCain began serving in the navy when Theodore Roosevelt was president. President Theodore Roosevelt had done a great deal to build up the United States Navy, and the McCains considered him one of the greatest presidents ever. To demonstrate US naval power to the world, Roosevelt sent the “Great White Fleet,” a parade of battleships seven miles long, around the globe. When the fleet returned in triumph in late 1908, young Ensign McCain stood at attention on the deck of the flagship, the USS Connecticut, to salute President Roosevelt. Slew McCain, short and slight, did not fit the image most people have of a military hero. But he made up for his small size with a fierce fighting spirit and unflinching courage, and his men were devoted to him. He rose to the rank of vice admiral during World War II. In the famous battle of Guadalcanal, Johnny’s grandfather commanded the land-based air operations of the United States and its allies in the South Pacific. In the last year of the war, Slew McCain commanded Task Force 38 of the Third Fleet, a carrier task force that took the combat all the way from the Philippines to Japan. Meanwhile, his son, John McCain Jr., idolized his father and yearned to be just like him. Jack McCain, also a small, slight man, graduated from the Naval Academy in 1931. He fought in World War II as commander of the submarine USS Gunnel, first in the Atlantic Ocean and then in the Pacific. After the war, Johnny listened to his father’s thrilling stories of many narrow escapes. Jack McCain’s worst ordeal took place in the East China Sea, as the Gunnel was being hunted down by three Japanese destroyers. The Gunnel managed to torpedo and sink one of the destroyers, but the remaining two attacked the submarine with depth charges. Commander McCain took his submarine down to three hundred feet, out of reach. After eighteen hours underwater, the carbon dioxide level of the air rose dangerously. The crew nearly suffocated, but Jack McCain managed to bring his ship and men through safely. On September 2, 1945, the Japanese formally surrendered to the United States and its allies. Vice Admiral McCain had the honor of being one of the officers present at the ceremony on board the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. Jack McCain was also in Tokyo Bay, now commanding a captured Japanese submarine, and the father and son met for a private talk after the ceremonies. Vice Admiral McCain was extremely thin, having worn himself out in the stressful last months of the war, but he was in high spirits. It was a privilege, he told his son, to die for your principles and country. Four days later, in the middle of a welcome-home party in Coronado, California, Johnny’s grandfather dropped dead from a heart attack. He was buried with full honors in Arlington National Cemetery, the historic military cemetery outside Washington, DC, and President Harry S. Truman sent condolences to Johnny’s grandmother. Soon after his death, Congress honored John S. McCain Sr. with the rank of full admiral. After the war, Jack McCain continued to devote himself to his career in the navy. During these years he worked at the Pentagon, in Washington, DC, and the McCains had a house on Capitol Hill. Jack McCain was happiest when he was working. Even on Christmas Day, after Sandy, Johnny, and Joe had opened their presents, he’d put on his uniform and leave for the office. As a young boy, Johnny wished his father would spend more time with him. Still, he understood, from his mother as well as his father, that it was an honor to have a father who served such a noble cause. A navy officer’s family, by supporting him and his work, also shared in that proud tradition of serving and sacrificing for one’s country. Johnny also learned, as a boy, to respect the officer’s code of honor. An officer did not lie, steal, or cheat. An officer kept his word. An officer knew his duty and did it, no matter how difficult. An officer accepted responsibility for his men and took care of them. Johnny could see for himself how serious his father was about the code. His brother, Joe, commented in later life that he’d never heard his father tell a lie. Once, Roberta teasingly accused her husband of lying during a card game. He was very disturbed that she would suggest such a thing, even as a joke. Roberta McCain set an example for her children by wholeheartedly supporting her husband’s career. Beautiful and charming, she filled the social role that hardworking Jack McCain ignored. She knew that wherever they happened to move, there would be other navy families to welcome them and to look out for one another when the husbands were away. But Roberta worried about her children’s education. They moved so often that the McCain children might be either behind or ahead of the curriculum in each new school. Worse, the schools at navy bases were almost always substandard. Classes might be held in an old hangar. Teachers came and went, and sometimes no teacher at all showed up. None of this bothered Johnny very much, because to him school was mainly a place to make friends. Like his father and grandfather, he was small for his age, but athletic and tough. He often got into a fight during his first days at a new school, just to show that he couldn’t be pushed around. He was a natural leader among the children, and a favorite among adults for his good manners and cheerful temperament. In each new home, Johnny proudly showed his friends a photo of the Japanese surrender on the Missouri, with his grandfather in the ranks of the American officers. To make up for the inferior navy base schools, Roberta McCain used the family’s trips across the country to educate the children herself. On their way to new homes she took Johnny, Sandy, and Joe to national parks such as Carlsbad Caverns and the Grand Canyon. She planned the route so as to visit art museums, historical sites, and beautiful old churches. When Roberta was a child in Southern California, her father had taken her and her twin sister, Rowena, on similar long road trips. Young Roberta and Rowena had learned geography, natural history, and other subjects by actually seeing the source of the Mississippi River, marveling at the Hoover Dam, and exploring Yellowstone National Park. Now Roberta wanted to give her own children the same opportunities. When Johnny was twelve, the family had to move yet again, from Washington, DC, to Coronado, California. On this cross-country trip, Johnny and Sandy squabbled endlessly in the backseat. Their mother ordered them to stop fighting, but Johnny answered her with a smart remark. Finally out of patience, Roberta McCain grabbed a banana as she drove and threw it over her shoulder at Johnny. The banana hit Sandy instead, which made Johnny laugh. Really angry now, Roberta grabbed an aluminum thermos and threw it at Johnny. He wasn’t hurt (aluminum is light), but he was indignant, especially when she laughed at him. Johnny’s mother, writing a letter to his father that night, reported that his namesake had become “a real pain in the neck.” Up to that time, he’d been polite and cooperative, at least with adults. It was the first sign (aside from his two-year-old tantrums) of the rebellious, defiant streak for which he would become famous.

I got this because my brother-in-law just got a metal detector and it's been his new thing. We wanted an activity that we could do together for "family bonding" and thought this was a fun and unique activity. After looking at a few different books, this was one of the ones we picked up to help guide us through this new adventure. This book is amazing! When it says it's your bible, it' speaks the truth. Whatever truth you believe in, this is it. It is a great book for seasoned hunters and newbies a like! This book does a great job of covering everything from gloves to contracts - really a great spectrum of advice for any one who enjoys metal detecting. I had no idea there was even such a thing as swing techniques until I picked up this book [ obviously I fall into the newb category ]. Amazing book! Well written, easy to understand and a must-have for anyone.

This book is a miracle. I bought this and a couple other books for my boyfriend and I when we decided to start metal detecting. It has so much information! It contains pictures, diagrams, and detailed information that explains practically everything. It covers basics like tools and basic principles, but it also has information on techniques, how to recognize good places for metal detecting and getting permission. There’s an entire chapter on detecting at the beach and parks! There’s also a chapter on how to clean and sell your finds. We got a few books on metal detecting, but this one was my favorite!

I have been at this 'hobby' for a little over a year now. Brandon's videos have been inspiring to me, and I have learned a lot from them. There have been so many times I wanted to engage him in conversation and 'pick his brains' for answers to novice and slightly advanced questions I had about the hobby. His book answers so many of those questions for me, he even addressed the 'phantom signal' thing that has eluded me many times! His knowledge of understanding your detector has honestly increased my skill level and I highly recommend this book to anyone who has recently started giving this hobby a go. Understanding the language of your detector is key, I seem to have had a natural knack for that, as I did not give up as so many new hobbyist do. Get your detector out of the closet/garage, read the book, and get back out there! Thank you Brandon! Happy Hunting to all!

There are 26 reviews as I am writing this. I read them all and agree with them all. When 26 reviews all 5 Stars, that says it all. Agreed it is not a Bible, because a Bible includes every possible thing. What I like most of all is the humor throughout the book. It put a smile on my face as I read it. There are also more photos in this book than most of the others I read helping to understand the material. If you are new to detecting like I am, then this is a must read. It is well done.

I bought this book because of Brandon's great youtube channel (DrTones24k), but for whatever stupid reason, I did not have high expectations for the book. I was pleasantly surprised. As someone who is new to the hobby, I must say that this is THE best book I have found on metal detecting. It is not incredibly in-depth, which I think is a good thing, and covers nearly every aspect of detecting. The book is fairly short and contains mostly just the nuggets of info that you really need to get started. It provides a solid jumping-off point for further web research of any of the many topics covered. Many metal detecting books that I have looked over previously were either out of date, a bit too in-depth for a beginner with no experience, or just a hasty compilation of crap geared towards making a quick buck. This book was none of those things and was cheaper than almost all of the others, too.I can't speak for experienced detectorists, but as a beginner I consider this book to be a 'must-have.'

Metal detecting always looked so easy and fun. Watching people scan the sand at every beach I’ve been at seemed to be an easy thing to do. This book is very complete and easy to read, he doesn’t make it complicated. This is a great book to get started in metal detecting. This guy knows his stuff. I got this book for my young nephew who is interested in metal detecting I thought if he read through this book we would be ready to purchase his first metal detector. So exciting!

I have followed Brandon via YouTube for a while and have been impressed with his enthusiasm regarding metal detecting.I was happy to discover he had written a book & purchased it almost immediately. He is thorough, takes the time to explain every detail and, as a result, I read this in record time.Thank you, Brandon, for pouring your heart and soul into this book. I look forward to new adventures via YouTube and hope to see another book in the very near future.

I'm adding my review because I feel this is an excellent book, well written and entertaining including some sarcasm of which I can relate.I did read some other reviews so I will share some of their opinion too. This is not a bible by any means, it's too short, not enough detail in some areas.Perhaps a better title could be "An Introductory to Metal Detecting"If you are like me, a beginner to MD and at the beginning of your learning curve, I highly recommend this book.It outlines the basics and explains the fundamentals.

Awesome book for beginners to pro's! Brandon is one of the best and a great personality as well. This is a great easy and fun to read book that has some priceless information in it. DRTONES24K - THANKS! Bottom line is this. Solid book from a solid guy who has real life passion for this hobby!

I have read a lot about Mary, Queen of Scots, but I did not know much about her second husband, Henry Stewart. This book gave me more details about Henry Stewart and his personality. He was a very arrogant individual. While he was not likable, he still made an important impact on Mary, Queen of Scots life. The book is very we-ll written, engaging, and comprehensible to the reader. I recommend this biography to fans of Mary, Queen of Scots by John Guy, Alison Weir's Mary, Queen of Scots and the Murder of Lord Darnley, and Mary, Queen of Scots: A Study in Failure by Jenny Wormald.(Note: An ARC was given to me in courtesy of the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.)

This is one of two books I got in an Amazon Children's Book Subscription service. The art is cute but the message of the story was distasteful to me. Basically the main character doesn't want to be a frog he wants to be any other animal, but his dad says too bad you are a frog. And then the villian comes and says it eats all the other animals but doesn't eat frogs so the main character should be happy he is a frog. So the moral of the story is you are who you are, deal with it because it could be worse?Even my three year old daughter called BS on the premise of the story. "But Poppy if the frog was an owl he could just fly away and not be eaten!". And, "Poppy you are better than the frog's daddy because you are not mean to me and will pretend with me when I want to be a aminal!"In the end we both decided we liked 'The Big Wide Mouthed Frog' better because he is proud to be a frog. In fact, 'I don't want to be a Frog' is just about the inverse of 'The Big Wide Mouthed Frog'. One is about someone who's ashamed to be himself and is only partially convinced of his worth when a villain explains he is inedible. The other is about someone who is extremely proud of himself and only finds partial humility when he finds out he's on the menu of a recent acquaintance. It chafes to have a main character in a toddler's book who doesn't like who or what he is. It chafes more for the response from an authority figure in the book is basically, 'Too Bad'. It rubbed me raw when the resolution isn't really growth or acceptance, but rather the realization that it could be worse. These are not the messages I want to give my daughter, "You are who you are, change is impossible and you should be grateful you aren't worse off.". I would rather her learn, "You are who you choose to be, change is possible with effort, and you should appreciate what you have, but not fear to try for more.PS. I didn't really like either of the books in the subscription so I cancelled it. These books are worth the price even with the discount.

I love this book! The storyline is very funny, and I’ve never seen a more perfect fusion of words and images in a picture book. Mike Boldt’s pictures make young frog’s enthusiastic energy jump off the page, and Dev Petty’s words charmingly and hilariously convey young frog’s wild imaginings of being some other “cute and warm” kind of animal in his dialogue with dad frog. The story’s dramatic pivot is when the wolf enters the picture and interrupts young frog’s reverie of freedom. The blissful ignorance of youth collides with nature red in tooth and claw. The uh-oh hold-my-breath expression Mike Boldt paints on dad frog’s face at that moment is priceless, and also dad frog’s look of exasperation mixed with parental indulgence later when it becomes clear young frog hasn’t quite grasped the message. And then there’s the bag full of “organic badgers” and the bug sandwiches and more. Kids who read and look at this book will laugh and say “eeewwwww.” Finally, one of the many lessons of the book is there are advantages to accepting and being who you are – not least, in this story, the advantage of not being an appetizing choice on the wolf’s lunch menu.

I was so lucky that this book arrived the day before our trip to Atlanta to see the grandchildren. I had purchased 3 other books for them also but this was the hit. I feel like I know it by heart after reading it everyday of our visit 3 or 4 times a day. Granddaughter is three and grandson is 6 and they both loved it. My husband was sitting in a chair across from us on the couch when I started reading and he had on his glasses. On their own they decided the daddy frogs name was "Pappy Frog" and every time it came to the page they point at Pappy and say Pappy Frog said. The illustrations were superb and they writing perfect for little ones to understand and enjoy. Most of the book my grandson could read himself but much to my pleasure they wanted Granny D to read it because I use different voices and make it even more entertaining, which didn't take a lot of effort with this book. It was the hit of out of everything we took to spoil them with. Highly recommend this book and I will be looking for more from this author. It was a hit with the adults watching the enjoyment of the grandchildren and the children stayed engaged in the story and truly loved this book. Through it all and even a couple of days ago granddaughter said "but I still want to be a pig". She loved the illustration of the pig and no matter what that was her favorite. I It was a great way to teach children about being happy with who they are and not wanting to be like everyone else. Diversity is a good thing, even though they are not ready for that word, they did get the point of the story. I hope you purchase and read to your children or grandchildren so you can experience what we did. Love, love, love "I Don't Want to Be a Frog".

I purchase hundreds of children's book each year. It has been years since I can recommend a contemporary book that stacks up against classics. This is the exception. Simplistic page text, that builds to the conclusion in a fun and silly genre, that is perfect for young children. The illustrations are perfection and the message is fortified with each page turn. "Be Happy With Who You Are"The bug sandwich had my 3 year old grandson laughing aloud. His twin sister became territorial with the book, insisting on sleeping with it on her nightstand. The next night they both chose "I don't Want to be a frog" for a repeat performance at bedtime.

While I understand why they split the map like they did, it would have been more helpful to also have a big fold out map included. It was difficult to get a sense of where you were in the big scheme of things just looking at one small page at a time. With that said, the maps are detailed, but not completely so. There were several instances where we could not find the roads we were on anywhere on the map. This was particularly noticed in the Picos de Europa area. We often had to rely on our GPS rather than the map. This was fine unless the GPS was unable to get a signal and then we were left looking at these maps. Overall, this guide was much less helpful than I thought it would be and I wish I had not bothered purchasing it.

I would return this Atlas if I could. Given that it has so many pages, you would think it would be pretty helpful. The road names are difficult to read the way they are labeled and although I haves used other Michelin maps (not the atlas) and I felt they were just as good as this atlas. Also it felt like the pages cut off in the worst places and it was not easy to make the transition from one section you another.

Had a previous version of this that was quite well used.....this one has so many good extras that in and of themselves make it a good purchase. Wish they had the same resolution maps for Spain and Portugal as they do for France, where you can see every little dirt road on the map, but this is still better than a GPS.

It’s a map. A Michelin map. It got me where I needed to go, and out of where I didn’t need to be.

We shall see how we get on with this map book in a few weeks on our Spain trip. One thing I would comment on is that the paper is super thin and might rip easily, so durability may be a problem.

Just what you need to drive. I have GPS, but this give better overall view. Wish there was a bit more overlap between pages. I highlighted my routes, marked distances, and tore out the pages for travel as only needed about 40% for my trip. Wish they marked Toll vs non Toll better.

Has all roads and railines as well so you can follow your route from a train too. I wore this thing out driving through Catalonia, Valencia and Murcia.

For European road travelers the Michelin Road Atlas is the best for detail and locating landmarks that one might want to see or visit. Smaller folding versions are available, but, this booklet form is the most satisfying and easier to use because of it's larger size.
