A leading critic of artificial intelligence research returns to the attack, attempting to lay the groundwork for an analysis of the true nature of intelligence. Building on his arguments in The Emperor's New Mind (not reviewed), Penrose (Mathematics/Oxford) begins by refuting the assertion that true intelligence can be attained--or even adequately simulated--by the strictly computational means to which current computers are ultimately limited. Much of his argument depends closely on the application of G”del's Undecidability Theorem to Turing machines--deep waters for laypeople, although the fundamentals of his argument are accessible to readers without sophisticated mathematical training. Having disposed of the central tenets of current AI research, Penrose then turns to an even more fundamental question: the actual foundations in modern physics (i.e., relativity and quantum theory) of the phenomenon of consciousness. Here much of his summary depends on fairly complex mathematical reasoning, although the key points are summarized for the general reader who has been willing to follow him so far. Penrose feels that a new physical synthesis, reconciling the paradoxes of quantum theory and bringing them into harmony with Einstein's gravitational theories, is ultimately necessary to explain the noncomputational elements of consciousness and intelligence. He speculates on the possible role of cellular structures called microtubules in creating a quantum phenomenon on a macroscopic scale within the brain, but grants that more research is needed to establish any connection between physical and mental phenomena. His conclusion steps back to a philosophical overview of the subject, paying homage to Plato, among others. A challenging examination of a central problem of modern philosophy, with no final answers but plenty of food for thought. I rate this book highly for its many interesting insights---great food for thought. I think Penrose' assessments of models of consciousness by other physicists are on the mark, including his critique of decoherence theories. He is probably on the right track in treating the collapse of the wave function as a real phenomenon, in which case he is correct is saying "what is going on will have no chance of being properly understood until we have a much more profound appreciation of the very nature of matter, time, space, and the laws that govern them." (p. 395)I was not persuaded by Penrose' own theory at all. The only connection between quantum mechanics and consciousness is that they are both mysterious. Moreover, it is the qualia of consciousness that is mysterious, not the fact that we are non-algorithmic.

Penrose is my favorite science author. He's not for everyone -- he's not afraid to use mathematics, and his diagrams (for me) are often unintelligible, but his pursuit of an understanding of the mind at the quantum level is worthwhile, even noble.

You think when you skim it "oh this is too mathy" but it isn't. You can understand everything, without any advanced math skills at all!

Another stunning book by Sir Roger Penrose. It's really a five star book discounted here by one star because those lacking physics and mathematics will find some passages hard work, even though the author is being as kind as possible in a book of this calibre.The book is a neat sequel to his "The Emperor's New Mind", extending the central theme that our little-understood human consciousness allows us to think way beyond the computational and mindless world of artificial intelligence.In doing so, we have a marvellous survey of classical and modern physics, including the mysteries of the quantum world.Sir Roger raises the question 'Will we ever be able to truly understand our own Nature-provided brain and its processes in terms of our own science?', and argues that, somewhere out there beyond our present reach, there is a unifying Platonic view of the Universe.This book is a tour de force on several planes. Highly recommended.

Penrose's writing is somewhat thick. It is worth slogging through it, however. Consciousness is the X factor in experiments. It is a large part of quantum mechanics. I liked this book. It is not light reading, though.

I studied physics and math and love popular science. Still, I found this book obtuse and non-engaging. Gave up after 3 focused attempts at reading it.

This is not an easy book to read or to follow. Still, it's required reading for someone like me who is interested in the Penrose-Hameroff theory of consciousness. I am always grateful when academics like Penrose write books for the general public.

Excellent alternative view to mainstream philosophy. Vast improvement over the emperor's new mind, especially in terms of having taken criticism on board. It can be read independently, even though it can also be read as a sequel of sorts. If mind and consciousness are interesting to you, and you like hearing about theories in physics, this is a great book.

I was intrigued when I saw the announcement for this book. I have a couple of other books by Morell, but this one seemed a departure. This book is so amazing. The beautiful and vivid depiction of love in such a pure and engaging form. I adore poetry and this book reminds me why. I recommend this book to everyone. Truly wonderful.

I used to consistently read poetry at one point, but I ended up stopping due to the repetition in words and ideas each author used. I decided to pick up this book because it seemed like it would be different than most poetry books. I liked the idea of compiling love letters of your significant other into one book and presenting it to the public (something that isn’t easy) I’m very happy with my purchase and will continue to read any new readings by fs. Yousaf!

THIS is my kinda poetry! It’s so happy, romantic, thankful, full of love and life! It’s uplifting, and reminds me of the best moments of life! It’s also interspersed with beautiful little illustrations!

An incredible book that captures the emotions we can’t always put into words. Including the times the poems were written is not only unique but illustrates the rollarcoaster of emotions we go through each day. You won’t regret buying it! I felt nostalgic & sad at first, then free & independently content by the end lol. Easily one of my favorite books..There aren’t any boring, slow poems to skim through, either, like in other books. It’s all so raw & painfully relatable. The author clearly didn’t hold back when writing this..definitely something you could read more than once!

Lovely and honest. I expected a little more content, however I think there’s more to be discovered in the written lines. I will re-read when I get the hard copy and most likely do so more than once. The poetry is very relatable, it expresses something we’re all longing for.

This book of poetry is more than words put together. The flow of the poems are breathtaking and so amazing, I will be re-reading this book, highly recommend that everyone reads this book too.

Good series for young readers. Descriptions of the relationship between a horse and a human are well written. The protagonist matures from an overly dramatic teen to a level headed young woman.

This is wonderfully unfolding story of a girl and the horses she loves. It's for dreamers and hard workers whether they have horses or not.

I am a horse lover over 50 and I enjoyed this series very much hope there will be more in the future

This series has made me smile and made me cry. It demonstrates the author's genuine understanding of what it takes to reschool racing TB's and make them into eventers. She doesn't shy away from the hard realities, but she allows you to glimpse the overwhelming satisfaction of success. I loved all the books in the Loxwood series and recommend them to everyone who has ever been privileged to have that incredible relationship that you can only have with that special horse.

I loved the detail and emphasis the author used in this book. I would read it as many times as I could for sure.

Wonderful tale of courage and determination! Having been to Kenya and seen many of these places it rings true. Well written.

This book hooked me from the beginning, and surprised me. This book took me to Kenya, where this book takes placed, and I followed along with Muchoki and Jata’s amazing journey. Along the way we see the determination and kind heart that Muchoki has. The possibilities in this book are endless, and just when you think nothing else bad is going to happen, a major plot twist happens. Determination and responsibility are all traits that come up in this book, along with being caring and loving. Muchoki is a one of a kind character with traits that make him so amazing to read about. After getting far enough in this book, you will start to realize that once you set your mind to something, you can do it with a little hope and determination.There’s four of them. Then three. And now it’s just Muchoki and Jata, traveling alone. Muchoki and Jata are doing the impossible-they are walking over one hundred miles across Kenya to search for the last of their remaining family. They had first lived in Eldoret, where their dad was killed in a church by attackers. They then moved to a refugee camp, where they suffered from hunger and boredom. Because of these conditions, their mom soon gets sick from malaria and dies a few weeks later. Now that their mom has died, the refugee guards need to separate them into orphan homes. Muchoki decides to escape the camp because he loves his sister and he can’t imagine life without her. So now it’s out to the long road by themselves to travel across Kenya with no money, a tiny bit of food and water (that they had saved up), and a lack of shelter.Our main character, Muchoki is very kind hearted and optimistic. These traits get shown very clearly when he takes care of his mother in the camp. “She pushed open the flap and came out. Her stride was uneasy, and although she was smiling, she didn’t look well. Her eyes were yellow and some how she looked like she was faded. ‘Come and sit,’ I said, offering her my hand. ‘You are a hunter, a cook, and a gentleman.’[…] Without asking, I scooped some more of the meal from the pot and put it in my mother’s bowl. ‘Eat.’ ‘I think you have come to believe that you are my mother rather than my son.’ ‘You need to eat. Food is the best medicine when you are ill,’ I say. ‘It is the only medicine we have, and we only have it thanks to you.’ She paused and looked at me thoughtfully.” (Walter, pg. 54, 56, 57) He also shows responsibility when he decides to take matters in his owns hands and starts to take care of his sister by himself and take her to their family members across Kenya. His perserverance and determination make his character very strong, and the amount of kindness in his heart is unbelievable. Even to other strangers, he is very delightful and enjoyable. For example, when his friend, Jomo, and him went to hunt gazelle, Jomo did not offer any of his share but Muchoki offered some of his, even though Muchoki does not have much. “‘But if you come to my tent,’ I said,’you are welcome too share a bowl of soup made from the meat. I would be honored if you joined us.’ […] I started walking again, towing the gazette and Jomo behind me.’He is not getting any of my share,’ Jomo declared.” (Walters, pg. 52).Throughout this adventure, Muchoki’s true colors shine through and we see the hero that he is. All the obstacles he goes through helps him learn that he can do anything if he sets his mind to it, and has a little determination and hope. Even the longest journeys start with one step, and of course hope! All in all, I give this book five out of five stars for the journey it took me through with two incredible characters that I will never forget! This book made me so emotional and I really got what he was going through. This novel also acts like a reminder to never take things for granted because somewhere else in the world people cannot even have a decent shelter or clean water.

I was transported to the dusty fields of Kenya as this story unfolded. Barbed wire surrounded me yet I felt secure. Living in an off-white makeshift tent, nestled amongst the thousands, we stood in line for food and water, every day was basically the same and the word that we clung to was hope. It was amazing how the author’s words carried me to a world so different from my own; I felt like one of them, accepted and wanted. I was amongst all the different tribes who were thrown all together by the in this tent society. These tribes were still divided yet Kenyans through and through. I was connected to Muchoki and Jata and when our trip was over, I wasn’t ready to say goodbye.Thirteen-year old Muchoki, his sister Jata and their mother, who has malaria, exist here in this camp, the conditions deteriorating as the days pass. The family plans to return to mother’s homestead once she is well enough to make the trip yet mother’s health never improves. Muchoki and Jata must make the long journey alone. As the siblings set off on this dangerous journey, it becomes less daunting for his seven-year old sister as he tells her a Kamba tale to ease her fears. This remarkable tale is a gem and I enjoyed the magical elements it unleashes in the story. It’s a dangerous journey for these two children, walking alone in a country where individuals are fighting, fighting for their individual tribes. Their journey was incredible and one that I could not put down until the very end. Each individual they met had a story, a story rich in history and full of pride. It was remarkable the journey, the more I think about the book, the more I love it. It would have been so much easier had they had a ride but looking back I think of everything they experienced, the people that they met and effect the journey had on them and I’m glad they embarked upon this journey together.
