Elizabethan artist John White, a gentleman of the court and a friend of Sir Walter Raleigh, made five voyages to the new world from 1584 to 1590 and provided England its first look at Native Americans and their home through his watercolor and ink illustrations. We put this on our coffee table for guests to look at, after I used it for researching the natives of the time period. It has impressive HUGE full color replicas of John Smith's work from the 1500's. Impressive how good the scan/ reproduction quality was on this. This is a lot of work for an author to have put together, and it is top quality. Buy it, you will learn a lot, and your guests will be impressed.

This is an extraordinary (and the first) compilation of John White's drawings of people and animals in the New World. A gifted artist, White drew and painted what he saw with an eye that seems modern, despite the fact that he lived and worked 400 years ago.This book is by far the best existing resource for seeing White's work. It could be filed in a library under any of the following headings: art, colonial history, anthropology, American Indians or North American Natural History. This book belongs in any good collection of books on any of those topics.

This is a wonderfully illustrated companion piece to the British Museum's complete set of John White's water colors. White, the Royal Governor of the "Lost Colony" on Roanoke Island, was a keen observer of the flora, fauna and native peoples of what later became North Carolina.For those wanting a first reflections of that time, when the British Empire was first stretching out to what became the United States, this is a great resource and well recommended.

A fantastic book with water colors by John White, of life in America in the late 1500's. Many of his drawings were destroyed when he sailed back to England. He could not take them with him when he left. What a shame.

A good historical account with John White's drawings.

On the contrary, I find Theodore DeBry's wonderful 1590 engravings after John White much more animated and, unlike White's watercolours, placed within the context of their surroundings. However, DeBry did take some liberties when interpreting White's ethnographic studies. This book also includes White's 1580s wc studies of animals and plants of the Carolinas. A wonderful addition to an art or early American studies library.

In school, I recall reading about the English colonists who came to North America. They were pioneers. They were welcomed by the Native Americans, who helped the settlers survive.That was also the picture sent back to England. This book explores the reality of what happened and that there was deliberate deception to entice more colonists (don't forget more money) to flock to New England.Great artwork, very good story.John

LISTEN TO ME and LET ME HELP YOU PASS! ALERT! THIS BOOK SAVES LIVES! I seriously for lack of a better word, SUCK at taking tests. I am horrible at math and thought I was doomed. After FAILING the CBEST the first time, (mind you I did no studying at all) I thought I would never pass. Its not rocket science material, yet you need to brush up on the topics. I made that mistake. I bought 3 books on amazon this go about.1) This CLIFFNOTES gem,2) CBEST Study Guide 2015: Test Prep and Practice Questions for the CBEST, (which was the first book I studied from. I sincerely did not learn much from this book. It didn't explain anything remotely helping me understand the questions, or how to solve them)3) "Cracking the CBEST" By the Princeton review 3rd edition, (I didn't even bother opening because the cliff notes book helped me so tremendously.)The Cliffnotes book really helped me grasp the math that I had forgotten all those years ago. It goes through each question and shows you how to solve the answer. Trust me. Perfect study guide if you need to pass quickly.*** The great thing about the CBEST test is that they take your best scores of any test and apply it to your most recent score, and boom! I took the first test on the computer and failed. I found the paper test to be more suitable for me.You need to get at least 127 and a minimum of 37 on each subject as long as the score balances out to 127. Hope this helps you guys out there! Thank God for this book. Thank you!

For someone who hadn’t brushed up on her basic math since well...probably 12th grade, and I’m now well in to my 30’s deciding I should now teach the future of the world, this book was thorough and just what I needed to pass the CBEST exam. I joined a class where we went through every single page. After taking the test and passing it I know that I would not have gotten through it without this book. It touches on every type of math you will need to know to feel confident in passing the exam. The reading portion is tricky as no matter how much you study you will need to have strategies set up in your own mind on how to eliminate wrong answers and even guess properly. All in all this book helped me most with re-learning all that math that I loved to forget. Good luck on your exam!

I cannot recommend this book enough for CBEST preparation. It is the primary resource I used to get ready, along with Kaplan to a lesser extent. I only had three weeks to study, but I felt that the CliffNotes covered everything that I needed to know to pass and gave me plenty of practice to do so. To any future test takers, definitely consider getting this when you're ready to study for the CBEST.FYI: Incidentally, I passed the test that I took back in January. Otherwise, my review might be less than favorable.

I highly recommend it, took the cbest twice before buying this, after ordering it I studied for about a month and passed it the next time I toook it.

If you're struggling with passing the chest, get this book! It definitely helped !!

Very general. It is a good guide to know what to go more in depth on.

For the math section, this book is very similar than other books I tried like cracking the CBEST. The problems in the practice tests are very similar to the ones on the actual test. I didn’t pass the CBEST math before I get this book, after getting this book, I passed it with a high score.

I am a health communication professor and I work closely with the university's premed program. I sometimes do trainings prepping the students for their med school interviews and many of my students have been successfully admitted to med school. Over the years I have gathered dozens of books in this topic. This book is in my top 10 favorites.This is a great book and I think that anyone preparing for an interview will find it to be incredibly useful. When my students ask for resources, this is in the list of book titles I give them. I would also like to point out that, in my opinion, the two best books to help you prep are The Medical School Interview: Winning Strategies from Admissions Faculty and Multiple Mini Interview (MMI): Winning Strategies from Admissions Faculty Start with the general one, and spend some serious time on it. Don't skip the 'why do you want to be a doctor' and 'what is professionalism' sections, they are gold! Then if you are informed that you will have an MMI, go ahead and read the other one. If you won't have an MMI, I would still consider browsing through it because it gives you interesting ethical questions to think on, which should get your medical communication juices flowing and ready for an interview!As someone who helps train prospective med school students, I want to emphasize that whatever book you buy, you need to practice. Practice out loud and hopefully to another person who is listening to you and providing feedback.

I liked this book. It gives a little bit of perspective to applicants from the interviewers/school's POV. Though, I don't think that it provides exceptionally "secret" information, I think the author does a really good job trying to get the reader to really think about their answer, especially to the general questions. I think it helped me with my interview and also answering my secondary application questions. It helped me change the perspective of how I answer the questions.

As a reapplicant that failed to move past the interview stage last cycle, I need to give special kudos and thanks to Dr. Fleenor for writing such an informative and helpful book for helping applicants approach what I consider the hardest stage of gaining admission into medical school. I especially loved how he helps the applicant visualize what the adcoms are looking for and really puts things in perspective.Reading this book made a significant impact on how I performed on my most recent interviews during this new cycle, and I am proud to say that I have been accepted at one of my top choices.Highly recommend.

This book provided a clear and concise way to organize my experiences and story for my medical school application. I used the outline that I prepared using this book to prepare for all of my interviews, and I felt confident answering all questions that I was asked during my interviews. I would highly recommend this book for any pre-medical student preparing for medical school interviews.

This book is helpful when it come to knowing more or less which questions you will encounter during a medical school interview. However, when the author tries to explain techniques for the 'high-yield questions' some of what he says is not necessarily relevant anymore. If the book were to be updated I would recommend it. While it is an easy read, it also eases your nerves for the big day!

You will love this book if you love Mary Sue characters, next to no plot, no consistency, playing light on rape, and over all a terribly written story. Spoilers ahead!!!I have read all the books aside from the last. This book starts off with promise. A world we currently live in but with dragons. The main lead is a teenage girl who is irresponsible, feels invincible, not too bright, and hates pretty boys. She spends her time obsessively trying to take pictures of dragons which is the only thing that makes her unique. Dragons have a law that despite being hundreds of years old the potential kings must turn into their human forms for 10 years to see what it is like as a human. Despite being hundreds of years old and supposedly wise beyond measure, these potential kings have to go to high school under a strict set of rules. Main rule: No falling in love with a human and no having sex. Dragons mate for life once they have been ceremoniously mated. A dragon eats a human...and that's pretty much the thing that starts the rift between humans and dragons through out the book. This one dragon continues to eat humans.Male dragon lead meets female lead and she is reminded of the guy who raped her since he looks just like him minus the eye color. She reacts so violently out of fear that she throws up on him and passes out. He tries to get her to like him, she decides halfway through the first book that she actually likes him and that his 99% same features as her rapist do not matter. They date. Girl decides she loves main lead dragon who is king of dragons and needs a mate. With serious trials that apparently a good portion end in death this girl passes with flying colors and even kills one of the most powerful dragons...with a sword....on accident. She gets to be queen of the dragons...and then another dragon turns black (the king dragon is black so there are now more kings which is a prophecy). Enter female lead older sister. Girl sleeps around without care, hates dragons and isn't afraid to voice it, and hates relationships because she gave up her virginity to a guy who she just met and find him with another girl the next night. So she meets 2nd king and basically through out the book insults the hell out of him and the other dragons and is consistent on her hate of them. Keeps him at arms length but all of a sudden decides she loves him and wants to be his queen. She doesn't go through the trails but has to decide the fate of one human and bam, she's queen. Last "king shows up" and its the lead female dragon (1st kings ex). And despite not liking humans she falls in love with the sisters' brother, who in itself is a lame Gary Sue story. I had to tap out after this.Aside from this romance a 10 year old could write, the dragons and humans are almost at war. Dragons are almost at war with themselves too. Only the kings, with the strength of their human queens, can save the world. *eye roll*

The plot is rock solid, and soooo goooodd! I couldn't stop. This was totally worth the read - I really love how Loth has woven the story together. I do think that the last 40% of the book (or, ever since Rowan finds out about the dragons) felt really rushed. ·small spoilers!· I mean, I love that we got to experience the queen trials, and I love how things happened with the POV change and all, but it kinda felt rushed, I mean, I feel like she could have taken some more time to get us readers into the experience of going through them (though I do expect there to be more elaboration about them in the next book, since not everything was shown). yeah, the only down side was the rushed feeling. I would have loved for her to go into a little more detail with how things developed, especially since the plot is so good. Anyway, apart from that, I love how she started the book out - did Aspen die? You know.And it's kinda weird that we sort of find out the villain, idk if I like that that much, since I think it could have been way more surprising later on, to the reader (I didn't really see it coming), and with her new powers at the end I totally expect them to START suspecting the guy in the next book, I mean, they really have no clue about him when there should have been some slight nagging feeling... Actually, there should have been some sort of small doubt somewhere, I mean, there's talk about other dragons being unfaithful and since the reader knows who the bad guy is, it's really a surprise that the characters are so blissfully oblivious. Anyway, I hope this suspicion really unfolds next book. And I'm kinda disappointed that the characters don't find anything amiss in this book about the betrayal, it would take an idiot to not be a little suspicious. I mean, at least one of the characters should sort of see that coming! Would have loved for the ID of the villain to have been revealed at the end, rather than at the beginning of the book.

Aspen – Book 2Aspen and Obsidian are back for more adventure. Too many human body parts have shown up to pretend there isn’t a rogue dragon with a taste for human flesh. Aspen’s love of dragons is a rare point of view among the fear held by most other humans. Relationship problems in the form of Obsidian’s former lover don’t help the stress levels. But we do get to meet several new characters that I loved – like Runa. I was lucky to snag books 2 through 4 when they were on sale near the end of October. The first story was so intriguing that I immediately started this one and did not want to put it down – so I stayed up later than normal to finish it.

I couldn't wait for the sequel after I finished the first book. I wish it was a little longer. It seems like this was just a bridge from the first book to the second. The book was over before I knew it, and it left me wanting more. The addition of so many new characters without real development from them was annoying, I want to know more! Overall it was a good book and I look forward to reading the third installment, but this book made me go from edge of the seat waiting for a sequel to I'll read it when I get to it.

I liked this series so far because it is an original tske on dragons. They coexist in our everyday world, have representatives in the government and are full of secrets. There is a mystery (one dragon is eating people) and there is a plot to kill the current king, and there is a prophecy... What else do you want? Buy and read this series!!

This book was beautifully written and had me interested and wanting to never stop reading at every turn. I believed the funeral at the beginning was Aspen's and I was a bit annoyed at myself for believing a main character had been killed off when Aspen was revealed to be alive. I loved the new characters that were introduced, they were all so interesting, especially Damien. This book played with my emotions at times, as did the first book of the series, but I've come to accept that that is the sign of a good book. I am certain anyone would love this series and I will most definitely be reading the next book.

In the years that followed I’d work in staggering, stuporous, stultifying heat: days when it was 114 degrees in the shade and there was no shade. When steel tools burned bare skin and liters of water, frozen solid at dawn, turned tepid by midday. Prickly pears would have desiccated to flaccid and skeletal white pads; antelope ground squirrels would have slipped into hypnotic trances of inactivity called aestivation; condors would be defecating on their legs to reduce their body temperature; lizards would crawl atop rocks, do a few halfhearted push-ups, and retreat from whence they came; and we’d be breaking rock in the full sun. In the years that followed I’d see hikers wilt, falter, beg for help. I’d watch the heat and miles and aridity wring the life out of men and women, young and old withering and reeling alike. I’d offer encouragement, or water, or salty crackers, or carry them out on litters, or radio in helicopters to fly them out. I’d search for those whom the heat had killed; I’d find their dead bodies on boulders in the sun. Always, even subconsciously, their plight would remind me of this first day, of the lesson that the sun and rock and gradient could break one like a brittle stick. What I couldn’t realize that first day was that I would come to love it all, not just the sadomasochistic craziness of the conditions but the way my animal mind and body would scheme and adapt in order to survive this oppressive, crushing, glorious place. I couldn’t realize what the canyon would become in my life, that it would hone my ever-gathering sense of self, that I’d feel more at home in that fiery desert canyon than I did in the Southern California city I was raised in. I couldn’t have known that this love would change even my memory of that day, crafting it into a narrative of initiation.
