I can't say enough good things about this extraordinary omnibus. It is astoundingly comprehensive and satisfying.In the 12-page introduction, we learn about Roy Thomas's first encounter with Conan in the Lancer paperbacks in the mid-1960s. We learn how he contacted Glenn Lord, the executor of the Robert E. Howard estate, and how the Conan series came about, and how Barry Smith became the original artist. We also learn how and when John Buscema and Gil Kane became involved, why the line work in Conan #12's "The Dweller in the Dark" looked so faded, and various other issues they had getting the book out, and much more. He goes point by point through all of the comics and magazines contained in the omnibus, talking about deadlines, issues with artwork, Martin Goodman's attitude about the character and paying for rights, etc. It's quite a ride. Roy makes the reader feel like he's right there.Next up is a 2-page map of Hyboria during Conan's time.We then proceed to Chamber of Darkness #11's "Sword and Sorcerers!", which features Starr the Slayer, Roy Thomas's original faux-Conan.Then we're off and running into "Conan the Barbarian" #s 1-26. Thankfully, the Omnibus also contains Smith's b&w Conan stories from Savage Tales #1 and #4, "The Frost Giant's Daughter" and "The Dweller In the Dark".The final pages (641-776!) are original artwork, rejected artwork, manuscripts, "Roy's Rostrums", in-house Conan advertisements, original art to Conan the Barbarian covers including 3 of my favorites, #5, #6 and #8, censored artwork before-and-after, introductions from previous Conan collections, cover reprints from the mid-1990s Conan #1-#11 reissues, and more.One slight disappointment is that "Red Nails" (from "Savage Tales" #2 and #3) is not here. I've only had the Conan Omnibus for a day, and haven't read it thoroughly, so maybe this is explained somewhere. I know "Red Nails" is a long tale, but if space was an issue I would've rather relegated Buscema's Conan #25 and #26 to Omnibus #2 if "Red Nails" could've been included this time around.(2/9/19 update- I see now that Marvel will be releasing a Savage Sword of Conan omnibus this spring, which will include Savage Tales #1-#5 which contain both chapters of "Red Nails", as well as "The Frost Giant's Daughter" and "The Dweller in the Dark".)The artwork is reproduced beautifully. Marvel, Roy Thomas and Barry Smith give us major bang for the buck here.As with most Marvel and D.C. omnibuses, for some reason new art is used for the dust jackets. I would prefer a repro of a vintage comic book cover myself, but maybe there are sales reasons for creating new covers.

My dad was a fantasy nut. I think he read most of the sword and sorcery paperbacks that were so popular in the 70's, and bought fantasy-themed comics too. I remember discovering his stacks of comics in the summer of 1975. It was like finding a gold chest. Conan, Kull, Claw, Red Sonja and the like, as well as more sci-fi themed stuff (my favorite of which was Atlas Comics 3-issue run of Planet of Vampires…but I digress). My parents divorced in 1976 and I began my own comic collection that Fall. I had been all through Dad’s stacks, but they were his and lived in the basement with a bunch of his stuff. After 2-3 years he gave them to me. A magic day that nearly tripled the size of my collection! He had long runs of many titles. But the most significant was Conan. Tragically, he had missed the first issue, but had #2-64 as well as some of the B&W Savage Sword mags…including the one with the classic Red Sonja cover. I have to admit I wasn’t a huge Conan fan in those days as my tastes trended towards sci-fi and superheroes. But Conan was the most complete series in my collection. I was very proud of it and dutifully extended my dad’s run for many years after.Which brings us to this fine book. I still have my original comics stored away, but bought this because I’ve enjoyed other Marvel omnibuses and this one contained stuff I just never had, like the Chamber of Darkness material. The reproduction is excellent. Of course, the colors are different on these glossy pages than the old newstock of the comic, but it looks great….pop right off the page great. The reproductions alone are worth the price, but the extra material really puts this book into must-buy territory. There's a fantastic 12-page intro by Roy Thomas and a map of Hyborea, but the biggest treasure is the last 135 pages which feature a relentless barrage of behind the scenes material, rejected art, original uncolored art, vintage ads and the like. This section could be its own book!If you’re a Conan fan, or just a fan of 70’s comics, you’ll want this. Highly recommended.

Everything good you've heard about this volume is true. Great artwork, great printing, and a wealth ( and I do mean wealth) of additional material; more than 100 pages of original artwork scans, scripts, etc. I don't know if this has been mentioned by other reviewers, but the coloring in this omnibus reflects the original comics from the 70's and NOT the dreadful, artwork obliterating recoloring of the Darkhorse editions from the early 2000's. This is how Conan is meant to be read. Enjoy!

The recoloring is super harsh. It overwhelmed the art. The large format is nice, though. Roy Thomas has given us good insights on his history with Conan.

Great book with new information. I am starting to replace my Dark Horse copies with the Marvel editions.

There's no reason to delay buying this collection if you're a fan of Robert E. Howard's iconic hero. And if you've never read this run, you're in for a huge treat! The art reproduction (with clean, black lines, clear colors, etc.) is fantastic. The writing is also top notch, and the excellent and lengthy introduction by Roy Thomas explains the efforts Thomas undertook to make Marvel's "Conan the Barbarian" happen (in short, Thomas was not just a superb writer on this and, later, the Savage Sword of Conan series, he was the main reason Marvel began - very successfully - publishing Conan's adventures)!

I don’t know why investment bankers think their deals are so fascinating to the rest of us. Perhaps they are impressed by the senior people they rub shoulders with or the idea that this confers status on them. I’ve just finished reading about ten books on China and this is by far the least interesting one. “We met with this guy, then that guy...who should go to the next meeting?...then I introduced this guy to another guy...blah, blah, blah....Did I mention how great Goldman is? I was looking to get some insight into China and how the Chinese think, but I found nothing of substance here, nothing practical that I could use in my interactions with mere mortals, nothing that I couldn’t gleen from The Economist or the FT. If you’re an ibanker you might find this interesting, but I suspect that the last thing Ibankers want to read about when not working (which is almost never) is someone else’s deals. There are a lot of great books about China and this isn’t one of them. Save your time and money and don’t buy this book.

Really great read and very refreshing take on China's transformation over the past 30 years. Paulson very clearly admires and respects China's leaders. With few exceptions they are portrayed as very smart human beings who care deeply about their country. In contrast to many writers, Paulson found the Chinese to be honest and forthright. It is noted that change comes slowly while consensus is built with large groups of decision makers. Frequent mention is made of the Communist Party's ongoing struggles to root out bureaucratic corruption and fradulent business practices in a country with three times the population of the United States.

I've read a lot of books on doing business with China. Most try and fail to build solid and iterative principles. Most are poorly written.Paulson's book is the best I've read. A lot of this is due to the high profile deals he has done - he has very strong anecdotes and speaks therefore from a position of authority.I'd say this is required reading above all others for those trying to do business in China. In a nutshell, he puts it down to an ability to read the situation is in China and tailor his deals to those greater objectives.USA needs people with the patience and understanding of China. Trump should read this and then maybe he would work pragmatically and not go on a populous inspired rampage and potentially cause a disaster between the two nations.Anyway I had to put this book at 3 stars because the last few chapters could have been put in another book. Too broad and most readers are exhausted by this point.

I won't echo many of the other reviewers, but this is an important book to understand China. I was encouraged to read about China's commitment to cleaning up the environment, and the challenges that come with incorporating that into their economic growth plans. Also pretty clear that Goldman's early work in China was an important factor in their going public in late 90's. Capital required for China was too much for a partnership to bear.

My son had a video of the book, which I enjoyed. I bough the book for my other son, who is a very avid reader. There is absolutely no question that Paulson is a very intelligent man, and was a great leader at Goldman Sachs. They sorely miss his leadership now, with little or no integrity left at the firm.I do question if Mr. Paulson had the Financial Industry, rather than the great American, taxpaying, middle class at heart when he called for the bailout of his Industry while he was Secretary of the Treasury. I think his career influenced his thinking.

From what I know of him, I like Henry Paulson. He has a laid back demeanor, seems a willing listener and is not overbearing in any way. However. as an author, I'm not so sure. His fascination with China is a bit puzzling, and the book is a bit boring.The book is primarily about Mr. Paulson's experiences with high ranking individuals in China and is divided more or less into three sections. The first relates to business experiences while he was at Goldman Sachs. The second, his involvement in China's economic development while he was secretary of the U.S. Treasury and the third and longest section, that is continuing, is about his relationship with China's leaders as the head of the Paulson Institute. The third section in particular, reads as if he is writing to the responsible Chinese officials rather than the general reader, as if he is expecting they will read the book. He is selling his services as they convert from a manufacturing to a consuming economy. He also offers help in the economical improvement of their environment.His premise is that communist or not, it is better to help the Chinese rather than be antagonistic of even agnostic toward them.

Paulson spends a lot of time talking about himself. There is just as much personal advertising content as there is about China. Within the personal advertising Paulson provides some valuable glimpses behind the scenes at GS, Treasury, and in China. The last several chapters proved the most valuable and insightful.

A rather limited account in which anyone still in power is wonderful, and those who are not are ignored, whatever their contributions to US-China relations or reform in China in the past. Paulson's access in China is at no risk at all after this book. But as an account of how commercial America looks at China and a description of economic interdependence between the two countries this book is worth reading.

So begins a remarkable study of the changing views of private property throughout American history. The dynamic tension is between land health, in the Leopoldian sense, and unfettered freedom. Freyfogle explores the major common law doctrines dealing with private property, as well as evolving statute law. Interwoven throughout the book are reviews of relevant Supreme Court cases. Landowner rights are seen as a "bundle" of rights that are subject to change as societal priorities shift. Although the book is fundamentally about law, it does not at all read like a legal brief. It is a very engaging read. Freyfogle reviews in detail the "tragedy of the commons", contrasting it with his own "tragedy of fragmentation." The two prophets that serve as his muses are Aldo Leopold and Wendell Berry. It is clear that we are going to have to rethink property law issues as we begin to face the limits of our growth. Freyfogle's book will be an important guidebook for us for years to come as we begin to grapple with these issues.

This is the best historical review of the institution of private property in the US that I have read. Unlike many scholarly books, it is written in very clear prose without a lot of technical jargon (at least, what technical jargon is deployed is explained). Highly recommended. Holds up to multiple readings. Very relevant to many current land-use debates. I appreciate also - even if I do not share - his optimism. One can only hope he is right and that we can manage to foster a better social stewardship of the land.

I found the book very extensive in the information and teaching of specific skills. It is easy to follow and understand. The photographs look exactly like the iPad screen, and the steps to complete a particular task are numbered in order. In addition there are tips about different gestures and how to use them. Each chapter is outlined with every topic of the chapter in order. I would recommend this book to all first time iPad users, and to more advanced users as a reference book.

Author Guy Hart-Davis has been around for a while and has authored six other “Teach Yourself VISUALLY” guides. This is a very thorough and workmanlike guide to using iOS 11 (and some earlier versions) on most iPad models. Because of the way iin which Apple evolves the iOS operating system, not all the features in iOS 11 are available on all iPad models. In 12 chapters and dozens of topics, Guy-Hart pretty much covers the waterfront o what you can do with your iPad and how. Copiously illustrated and very well-written, each topic gets a one or to page treatment. In many ways, this is the instruction manual Apple should have published. They sort of did in their extensive Help system, but this format is far more accessible. Yes, you can get every bit of information contained in this book by searching the internet, but as noted above, the information is far more accessible here. I consider this both a basic user’s manual detailing virtually every operation you can undertake on an iPad and as a reference manual. A very nice piece of work, indeed.Jerry

Like other "Teach Yourself Visually" books, this book is heavy on graphics and light on words, with a typical page being a screenshot with lots of annotations - you really do get a sense of what you see on your screen as you want to do something and can pretty easily figure it out by reading annotations - a good and powerful approach to most of the basic tasks on the Mac.For somebody pretty new to a iPad (or maybe someone who hasn't used some of its functions), the book will be very helpful. It probably is not for a more experienced user, though could serve as a good reference.It is well organized across different tasks (e.g., working with music files) and has a good table of contents and index (both of which can be seen here on Amazon).Recommended, especially for someone new to an iPad.

This was not supposed to show fingerprints but it shows everyone of them. I would not buy it again because that was the selling point for me.

It's probably just me. Maybe these stories, essays, etc will be of help to some people. I just hated them. Having just lost my son, they did not help with my grief but seemed to exacerbate it. Again, it's probably just me and where my head is at. I threw the book away and will be staying away from these books for now.

As a recent widow, this book just made me sadder. So much loss, so many sad stories. I suppose seeing how people have carried on would help some grievers, but it just makes me more melancholy to think that I have to carry on without my sweetheart by my side. Oddly enough, I recently met the husband of one of the people profiled in the book, and that was a bit of a shocker. I didn't expect to see their story of loss in this book.

This is a really-really nice book! I give these books to people who have lost loved ones, and they really find comfort reading them.

I am not a 'chicken soup for the soul' fan. However, this book was given to me after my mother passed and it was one of the best books to help me through her passing. I have since bought it for a friend of mine who just lost a parent. She also claimed it has helped her too. The reason this book is good is because it deals with real stories about people going through the same process. Unlike most books about grief which tell you how you'll feel or that it is okay to feel a certain way and then explain the process of grief, this book offered uplifting, and comforting stories.

A major tear jerker. But a pleasant read. Although I wish more stories didn't involve grieving during Christmas. Felt like that was the subject of the book and I didn't like it much because not everyone grieves then and most importantly not everyone celebrates it. I don't know. Just my own opinion.

I bought this book for my best friend's (since we were 5 years old, we are 30 now)little brother who is 15 years old.In June 2008 we had a horrific thing happen to our family, our beautiful sister, daughter, cousin, freind, and aunt was hit and killed by a drunk driver on a motorcycle who was 3 times over the legal limit and racing another motorcyle (who was not injured in the accident),Our Sweet ANGEL was only 17 when she was taken from us.There is a specific story in the book that talks about "water bugs" and "dragonflies" that we can all read and instantly think of our beautiful angel, who had been taken from us in such a tragic way.I recommend this book to anyone who has suffered the pain of a loved one or freind, even if the loss was not tragic, the loss itself is the tragady and this book will help somewhat how to cope with that loss.There is nothing we wouldn't give, do, sell, buy, whatever to have her back. The reality sadley is that she is not coming back, she is gone....I know that when you think of a loved one your eyes fill with tears, but I also know that when you think about the one you lost, it is ok to smile and laugh when remembering times with them, if you don't it makes it seem as if they caused sadness, or sorrow but it is the complete opposite in fact, all they brought was unconditional love, kindness, warmth, joy, happiness, and that is just a few of many things.Please don't get me wrong it is good to cry when remembering your loved one but you should also smile every now and then when you think of them and the happiness they had brought to your life as well as each persons life they touched while they were still here. And know you will indeed see them again one day. I hope that this book has helped your family as it has for mine.

A friend lost her husband and she was in deep grief. I felt the best way to express heartfelt sentiments that lasted awhile was to buy this book for the grieving soul to uplift her and help get her through a hard time. This book was much appreciated and also gave her support when others were not beside her. It reaches out and touches in such a helpful way when quiet just won't be still.
