John Prados is well known to careful readers of World War II history as one of the best historical researchers and writers about the Pacific War. Here he turns his attention to the largest naval battle in history, the Battle for Leyte Gulf. Starting with C Vann Woodward's account of this battle, I have on my bookshelf no fewer than 10 other accounts all or part of this battle, some of them by other eminent historians including Evan Thomas and Anthony Tully, Robert Lundgren, and James Hornfischer. plus of course there are other versions incorporated into larger surveys of the Pacific war, going back to Samuel Eliot Morison's multi-volume history of the entire American naval side of WW II. So, what can be added at this date?Prados takes advantage of additional declassified information concerning US radio intelligence. He delves into the personalities of the major actors, including those in the Imperial Japanese Navy. He skillfully gives a thorough background, a vivid and detailed account of events, and a reasonable set of opinions about the many controversies. It is illuminating (at least to me) to read that Halsey could not have easily placed his fast battleships (the to-be-formed if needed Task Force 34) to guard the exit from the San Bernardino strait into Leyte Gulf against the advance of the Japanese surface forces under Admiral Kurita, given his geographic position when he decided to go north to chase the Japanese carrier fleet commanded by Admiral Ozawa. He offers the reasonable speculation that turn away from torpedoes that took his largest battleship, the Yamato, and the next most powerful, the Nagato out of the battle for a critial period was ordered by his subordinate Admiral Ugaki, who chafed under Kurita's command.All in all this is a well-written, thoroughly documented, and balanced view of a familiar story. It added to my knowledge and insight, and I'm glad to have read it.

In the entire history of naval warfare, there has never been a battle as large as the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Fought between the juggernaut U.S. Navy and the desperate Imperial Japanese Navy in October, 1944, this battle saw the last attempt by the Japanese to inflict a crushing blow upon the Allies and swing the tides of war back into their favor.John Prados does a wonderful job of setting up the scene for this titanic clash, providing lots of information and detail on the planning which went into the battle, the forces involved, and the commanders calling the shots. He sheds light on the key role the Allied intelligence services played in deciphering Japanese plans and movements, as well as how key decisions in crucial moments came to play a major part in the outcome. Much has been written about the battle from an American standpoint, and this book helps balance things a bit by providing a good look at the Japanese viewpoint. Even though the Japanese faced long odds, they still felt a major victory could stem the Allied tide heading towards their shores. Prados examines the Japanese commanders, forces and decisions in great detail, thus helping the reader understand they hows and whys of their actions. He doesn't go into as much detail on the Allied (predominantly American) side, possibly because so much has previously been written from their viewpoint.Now, in a battle of this magnitude, decisions are made which don't always work out for the best. There's an old adage that no plan ever survives an encounter with the enemy, and this certainly applies in many aspects of the battle. While others have found fault in the decisions or indecision of both American and Japanese commanders, Prados examines things carefully and puts forth interesting and thought-provoking evidence which shows the decisions (or lack thereof) were actually not as bad as some have claimed, or else were simply the inevitable result of the mindset and training of those involved.Overall, a really excellent book which is heavier on the strategy and decisions involved than the actual combat, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't read it. Having read several books on the battle, I was pleased to learn much more about the Japanese side of things, as well as how much the role of intelligence gathering played in the planning and outcome.Pick this one up--you won't be disappointed.

The Denver Post August 31 1997 The painting hanging on Anthony Ipsaro's office wall depicts three early 19th century white guys dressed in buckskins and gathered around a campfire. At the end of the 20th century, Ipsaro says, white guys might as well be relegated to the wilderness because they are being left out of the greatest transformation of the American workplace in all the nearly 200 years that have passed between the time of that scene and now. When he describes white men as engaged in their "last stand," Ipsaro is no raving political reactionary trying to stave off an inevitable loss of power. White and male, he's also a rather mild, dapper, double Ph.D., whose book, "White Men, Women & Minorities in the Changing Work Force," states simply, "White men are the missing link in the corporate plan to successfully diversify the workplace." Why? Because "the power positions are held by predominantly white males," he said in an interview in his Cherry Creek office. "They're trying to change the workplace without inlcuding the power structure." So Ipsaro argues for inclusion, inclusion of white men in the change. White males need to be convinced that changing the complexion and gender of both the workplace and the executive suite will boost the bottom line and themselves personally, he said. Right now, white men are confused and suffering for it. "Their anxiety comes not because white men think they are the bad guys, but because others are treating them as though they are the bad guys: their partners, their children, women and minority co-workers, and younger men," Ipsaro writes in his book. Forced out of their traditional role as producer, protector and director of the nation's resources, in Ipsaro's words. But, he also says men should welcome the new role. If women and minorities are allowed to assume more power, men will have less responsibility for wielding it, Ipsaro says. The expanded workforce will include more talent, more new ideas and renewed corporate creativity, helping the bottom line. White men will learn to spend more time - and enjoy more of it - at home, with their families, enriching their lives with relationships, not professional affiliations. Sounds like a counselor? Ipsaro is one. His first Ph.D., in organizational administration, came from the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C., and his second, in clinical psychology, comes from the University of Denver where he applied as a 50-year-old, and where he made it clear he wanted to study men's issues just as feminists were studying women's psychology. His book, which he self published at a cost of about $100,000 so far, is a favorite of Dick McCormick, chairman of US West, said May Snowden, the company's executive director of diversity programs. McCormick has bought several copies and handed the down the corporate ladder to other "leaders," said US West spokesman David Beigie. And last June, Ipsaro was the primary presenter for Motorola's White Male Cultural Awareness Month, a series of nine sessions at which about 1,800 employees of Motorola's Phoenix-based Semi-conductor Products Sector learned why white men are who they are, what to expect from them, and how it translates to a workplace that is more and more diverse. Snowden said she sat through a similar session several years ago when Ipsaro held a seminar for US West's women of color. "It was like new information," she said. "We kind of had forgotten what white men were like, and we left saying, 'Oh, that's why these things happen.'"

About the Author

Anthony J. Ipsaro is an internationally acclaimed educator, organizational consultant and a psychological counselor to both men and women addressing issues which face men in their families, work and social relationships. He works with corporate, professional and educational groups throughout North America, Africa, Asia and Europe focusing on cultural and gender distinctions. His seminars treat sensitive topics of gender and race relations in an understandable, respectful, entertaining and provocative manner. He provides individual skills and organizational strategies that help create greater productivity and success in a rapidily changing business world. Dr. Ipsaro received his Ph.D. in Organization and Administration from the Catholic University of America and his Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Denver. He was awarded postdoctoral fellowships from Harvard University in both Organizational Behavior and Clinical Psychology at the McLean Hospital. A long-time educator, Dr. Ipsaro served on the faculty of Graduate Studies of Education at the University of Notre Dame; as special consultant for Innovative Programs at the University of Dayton; and, as Teaching Affiliate in the School of Professional Psychology, University of Denver, Colorado. He has been studying and consulting with men for over 40 years. This book was an ok read. I didn't have interest to finish the entire book...so it may have improved towards the middle to the end.

Dr. Ipsaro, a double P.h. D. in Psychology and Administration, identifies a new and innovative way to change the productivity of a diverse workforce - including the white male. In a detailed and logical way, Ipsaro illuminates the history and role of white men, women and minorities in society and the work place. Ipsaro argues that many old world behaviors of the white male are still present today in businesses and society- mainly that they are still resource providers, directors and protectors. In essence, this means that they are still the ruling class and behaving by the standards of yester year. According to Ipsaro, the world has changed and most white males have not evolved into the new world. In order for diversity to be actively engaged in business, argues Ipsaro, the white male must become involved and lead the change. For instance, Ipsaro uses the Motorola Company as an example of a company that has empowered women and minorities. As a result, the company has promoted a substantial amount (more than 50 %) of women and minorities into senior leadership and management positions. The innovative change in diversity has positively impacted the morale and production of the company. With inclusion, as evidenced by Motorola, companies will be better served in diversity initiatives, and ultimately more successful businesses. Ipsaro concludes with a call for white males to become the driving force for leveraging diversity programs and incentives in the workplace.SOME OF THE KEY THEMES OF THE BOOK INCLUDE:* Inclusion of the white male is essential for positively changing the diversity of the workforce: Ipsaro notes that many white males are in senior management, and although many of these executives have planned and implemented diversity programs, few have included themselves in these programs. Ipsaro notes that old world values are obsolete in the world today, and white males must share leadership with women and minorities. This, in his words, would "relieve some of the burden" white males feel about leading a workforce. According to Ipsaro, this would allow more time for white males to balance personal and professional life and lead to a more diverse and productive work force.* A fusion between organizational, unit, and self integrity is essential in developing a diverse workforce: Ipsaro notes that "trust is what holds a family, a group, an organization, a country together." Although everyone is different, argues Ipsaro, it is essential to find common bonds that unite a group in the pursuit of a common goal. Ipsaro notes training, group discussions, and an environment that encourages open dialogue as vehicles to increase self, unit, and organizational awareness of diversity in the workplace. Things such as empowering employees, matching talents to tasks, sharing and promoting a blending of cultures are keys to successful fusion in the workplace. About the Author

Dr. Roberta Gilbert is a psychiatrist whose main interest is emotional processes in the family and in organizations. She first studied the family in a Post Graduate Program at the Menninger Clinic. Subsequently, she studied with Dr. Bowen and became a faculty member at the Georgetown Family Center, now the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family, where she continues to teach. She is the founding director of the Center for the Study for Human Systems, where she developed and now directs "Extraordinary Leadership Seminars." In addition to "The Eight Concepts of Bowen Theory," she is the author of "Extraordinary Relationships: A New Way of Thinking About Human Interactions" and "Connecting with our Children: Guiding Principles for Parents in a Troubled World," 1992 and 1999. Dr. Gilbert is frequently called upon to speak at special events and conferences.

I’m a systems engineer who was exposed to Bowen family systems theory while in seminary. I’ve found Bowen theory immensely helpful for understanding families and organizations as living entities. On the other hand, I’ve found most of the books on Bowen theory fat, fluffy and tedious. So I’ve been looking for a short reference that covered all the basic elements. This book meets that need, and I’d recommend it for that purpose - thus the 4 stars.That said, I’ll also offer two critiques – one of Bowen theory, and one of this book. First, Bowen theory is a product of its time and vastly over-privileges the rational intellect. It often seems to dismiss any wisdom embodied in the emotional reactive system itself. For a counterpoint, read Jung. Somewhere, there’s a balance between reason and information stored in the collective system; it is a hollow victory to become “fully differentiated” in the Bowen theory sense.Second, as another reviewer noted, the author seems unable to see herself systemically. In talking about the "regression" of society, Gilbert falls victim to the very type of emotional reactivity that Bowen theory seeks to expose. She is highly invested in the theory, suspicious of any evolution in the family/societal system away from prior norms, and anxious to deflect criticisms that Bowen theory itself has contributed to the blaming of families that feeds into the changes she dislikes. In short, her anxiety level rises and suddenly a list of "causes" for societal regression appear. Are they really objective causes, or just another triangle attempting to shift focus and find someone to blame?

The eight concepts of Bowen theory are some of the most important components to help one's self become more aware of his or her inherited emotional formation and reactivity. Every person grows up in a family context of attitudes, dominant narratives, and reactivity. To know such information allows one to assess their family anxieties, emotional landscape, and relational issues and cut-offs. In doing so, one then can then become aware that his or her own emotional reactivity, etc. is the fruit which is produced from the seeds planted when one is a child and teenager. To know such things gives a person the opportunity to decide whether he or she wants to engage practices so as to move from their present circumstance into one they hope to achieve.

I see some ratings hit hard on this book due to its watered down nature. Although its a great reference guide, and intro for my clients. It quickly and efficient introduces Bowen theory and captivates beginers. If you are not a beginner I recomend pass this book up and ordering "Family Evalutaion" by Kerr and Bowen

Families matter. How much they matter to our health and well-being is sometimes shocking. Frequently in patient visits in an emergency room, physical and psychiatric problems could be linked to problems elsewhere in the family, such as a death or special trauma. This might be obvious when a young mother comes in complaining of chronic headaches, but it might also be a significant factor explaining backache, heart attacks, stroke, ineffective medication, and drug addictions. Of course, as a chaplain one needs to ask.Family systems theory helps to make sense of these connections by focusing on “the family as an emotional unit”, rather than on particular individuals (3). This focus runs counter to most counseling approaches which assume the clinical model where the individual is treated as autonomous. Problems with their origin outside the individual obviously cannot be solved by treating the individual alone but that is the common practice. The systems approach often yields counter-intuitive results . Family systems theory is often applied to other “emotional units”, like offices, churches, and groups, where relationships are intense and span many years.In her book, The Eight Concepts of Bowen Theory, Roberta Gilbert outlines 8 principles of family systems theory which outlines her chapters. These chapters include:1. Nuclear Family Emotional System;2. The Differentiation of Self Scale;3. Triangles;4. Cutoff;5. Family Projection Process;6. Multi-generational Transmission Process;7. Sibling Position; and8. Societal Emotional Process (4).These chapters are preceded by an introduction and followed by an epilogue. Murray Bowen developed family systems theory in the 1950s working as a psychiatrist at the National Institute of Health in Washington DC; he elaborated this theory as a faculty member at Georgetown University . Robert Gilbert was one of his students.In her explanation of emotional units, Gilbert write:My grandfather’s herd of cattle…Say the cattle are peacefully grazing…but…one cow gets too close to the electric fence, sustaining a shock, she may jump, vocalize and even jump or run, showing that she is in a very anxious state. How long does it take for the other cows in the pasture to ‘catch’ the anxiety? Of course, it happens almost immediately. Their behavior soon becomes agitated, showing they have taken on the anxiety of the initial individual. The cattle are showing, by the movement of anxiety through the herd, that they are an emotional system (6).Anxiety transmission is a flag for the limits of an emotional system. Gilbert classifies anxiety as acute—in response to stress—and chronic—the background anxiety in a group (7-8). Relational responses to anxiety come in 4 patterns:1. Triangling;2. Conflict;3. Distancing; and4. Overfunctioning/underfunctioning (11-12).Anxiety is infectious (7). Anxiety transmission is more rapid and intense in tightly “fused” groups where individual are relatively close and unprocessed emotions run wild, so to speak (21). Anxiety transmission is less rapid and intense in groups with individuals who are “differentiated” where individuals are able to separate feelings from thinking and emotions are less readily shared (33). Gilbert’s grandfather attempts to be a “calming presence” when he is working with his cattle (22).Family systems theory clearly focuses on how a particular group resolves anxiety.Triangling. An important therapeutic result from family systems theory arises in how anxiety is resolved. If a parent is anxious, then the other parent picks it up. If a child is nearby, they too will become anxious—the child becomes the third corner in a “triangle”. If this situation is repeated, then the child may develop a symptom (48). Not so good. The author is rather dismissive of major church denominations for not speaking with a clear (authoritative) voice. But the issues of American society since 1950 have been anything but simple. It takes more than being self-righteous and shouting at people to show people the way.

Wonderful book. Helped me improve many of my relationships with not only family members but with coworkers as well. It's easy to fall into classic dysfunctional patterns with people, but Bowen Theory helps promote recognizing these roles and breaking out of them. Anyone who is interested in Taoism, Buddhism, Waking Down, or simply having healthier interpersonal relationships should check out this book. Very accessible and useful!

As a life-long fan of old-time baseball who's read extensively about Babe Ruth's life and his impact on the game, I was expecting merely an enjoyable read when I picked up Jane Leavy's latest baseball biography. I had thoroughly enjoyed her earlier biographies of Sandy Koufax and Mickey Mantle and figured her take on the Babe would be equally lively and entertaining but wouldn't be able to offer much in the way of new information or analysis given the extensive volume of prior studies of Ruth's life and career. But I was pleasantly surprised to find there's a great deal in this book that is new, particularly the cultural analysis that Ms. Leavy weaves through the various stops along the 1927 postseason barnstorming tour that sets the stage for her story. She conveys the impact Ruth and his manager Christy Walsh had on popular culture, foreshadowing the celebrity-obsessed society that followed them. Equally interesting are Ms. Leavy's insights on Ruth's character, including his early life at St. Mary's and the bitter disappointment following his retirement as a player of being excluded from the game that truly meant everything to him. In addition, the interaction between Ruth and Walsh Ms. Leavy describes is fascinating, particularly Ruth's anti-authoritarian instincts and Walsh's management of them. Ms. Leavy has written a unique and insightful interpretation of Babe Ruth's life and career that anyone interested in baseball or the cultural history of the United States over the past hundred years will enjoy immensely.

I've thoroughly enjoyed Jane Leavy's previous baseball books but I found this book on Babe Ruth to be found wanting. It is not a traditional biography of Ruth from beginning to end but a mixture of episodes in The Babe's life certainly not in any chronological order. Simply put you are going to be told much more about Babe Ruth than you really care to know, much of it mundane.Much of the book deals with newspaper reports of well-known sportswriters from the Babe's time period which is okay with me. The period dealing with Ruth's illness was also well-done. I found myself reading about the first one-hundred pages and then started skimming the book from that point onward until I got to the part dealing with the end of his life.I bought four copies of the book, three of which I will give as gifts to friends. If I had to do it all over again I would buy only one and let it go at that. I'm sorry but I was disappointed with the book.I found one mistake at the very beginning of the Acknowledgments. Bobby Thomson hit his Shot Heard 'Round the World on October 3, 1951 and not on October 4 as the book states.

This book is a gem. The Babe is portrayed in the context of his era and his life is examined, if not explained, with a sensitivity to his early years. Well researched, it also debunks many of the myths that surrounded him. It is a great story and the fact that it is not a boring chronology makes it stand apart from the ordinary sports biography. It is organized around a barnstorming tour but relates back to Babe's beginnings and it holds together well. If you want to know what Babe Ruth did on the baseball field, you can read plenty of other books. If you want some insights into who Babe Ruth was and how he grew into an icon, you will want to read this one.

I just finished reading "The Big Fella: Babe Ruth and the World He Created" by Jane Leavy. On the surface, this is a book about the barnstorming tour Babe Ruth took with Lou Gehrig after the World Series in 1927. However, the author cleverly uses this as a framework upon which to tie in stories from his birth, youth, life in St. Mary's, introduction to professional baseball, drinking, womanizing, and of course, playing with kids and hitting home runs -- and some of the details of Babe's life have been badly distorted in the myths of pop culture over the years. This work is thoroughly researched (it took the author 8 years to research and write it), well organized, well documented, and very well written. As a lifelong baseball fan, I thought I had the basic Babe Ruth story straight in my head -- I was only partly right, and I learned a great deal reading this engrossing book. I would be remiss if I did not mention the appendices -- Ms. Leavy not only does the obvious and summarizes the Babe's baseball statistics, but she also goes much deeper into the story and summarizes the Babe's personal finances, and goes to show how much the Babe profited from Christy Walsh's management. She goes on to document all of her sources in detail -- hundreds of interviews with family, relatives, teammates, friends, etc. -- and explains how she was able to set the record straight (e.g. on Babe's birth and early years). Any aspiring young writer would do well to read these appendices in detail, because in them they will find the blueprint of how to properly research a subject thoroughly enough to be able to write on it knowledgeably. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

If you are looking for a conventional chronological biography you may be confused by this book. It is very much a biography but it is expressly nonchronological, designed around a three-week barnstorming tour following the 1927 World Series. It tells the day-by-day story of this trip, with wonderful period details, but it also weaves backward and forward, from turn-of-the-century hardscrabble Baltimore to 1920s New York and beyond. It explains why Ruth was a transformative ballplayer, but the focus is on how Ruth advanced and in many ways created the culture of celebrity, and why you can draw a straight line from Ruth to the cultural icons of today. It also introduces (at least to me) the character of Christy Walsh, the agent-cum-impresario who steered Ruth away from imminent disasters and helped mold the public persona. Leavy is a gifted writer, always open to the anecdote (and there are many great ones) but also focused on the heart of her story.So unlike most sports book this is not a snack, or even a dessert. It is a satisfying meal, one that will linger in the memory for a long time.

One thing I really didn't like is how it is set up for kindle, because if I buy a book on the store, I expect that it really fits to kindle, and that means for me f.e. no white site in between the story. And because of the problem of white pages I give only 4 stars. The story is freaky-cute and funny. And now the story:*** For all who don't like spoiler - stop here to read! ***Penny tells her story - how she bacme a zombie, and how she dies. Penny was a normal teenager, until her father is killed by a vampire girl. Penny is nearly also killed by that vampire girl, but her supposed uncle rescues her and converts her into a zombie to fullfill her families destiny as vampire killer. And in the end she is killed by her "uncle" to avoid the risk of epidemic of zombies.

All in all a good,quick read. Very meat and potato orientated, meaning straight to the point not much character development. Looking forward to more
