I had always known that learning Spanish is important for my tango, but the thought that it would take years and more to master this language held me back…Thanks to the tips in this book, I realize that only learning the essential will suffice. this also gives me the courage to kick-start the learning. I believe the learning of Spanish would help in my life too. Yes, I'm starting to learn now. Learning about the origin of Argentine Spanish also gives me insights on the history and culture of Argentina, and that will be good for me too.It is also interesting to know about the tips for a safe trip in Buenos Aires. It also provides some good suggestions on transportation and accomodation in the place. I don’t have any plans to go to Buenos Aires yet…but who knows? It is fun to know the traditions and “hidden rules†in the local milongas as well.There are many kinds of useful phrases, vocabularies and native idioms in this book. But for a Spanish-learning beginner like me there’s no way for me to know the pronunciation. I look forward to an audio version of the book, or at least for phrase lists.
I first purchased it two months ago, then I purchased another 3 paperback versions, to give as a gift to my friends learning Spanish. I found in it a wealth of useful information. I enjoyed mostly the references to the unique character of the Argentine Spanish, especially the references to the Italianisms and specifically to the wide use of Lunfardo, which is such a rich language in itself. This book is a must for anybody that really wants to communicate effectively with an Argentine person.
What I like about this book is that it doesn't try to overwhelm the readers with a lot of information. Instead it relates only the essentials, rather comprehensive really, for an enjoyable and safe trip to Buenos Aires. Written by a tanguera for the community, I am more than happy to add that to my tango collection.
Excellent book! It's very informative. The content is carefully written with precision. You can learn more than Tango, Essential Spanish, travel tips. The part of Argentine Spanish culture is particularly fun and interesting. You can hardly find similar book like this one.
I have found this book very useful for a better understanding of the Argentinian culture, and the spirit of this unique type of dance, music and lyrics, full of nostalgia.
If you are going to Buenos Aires with the purpose of enhancing your knowledge of Tango, this is the book to bring with you. The bulk of the book is a typical phrase book, covering the essential phrases you'll need to survive in and around activities related to tango. However, this book offers more, it also acts as a guide book and provides suggestions for other essential things such as getting around, shopping, payment and other practical tips. Another important section is the comparison between Spanish spoken in Spain and Spanish spoken in Argentina. Who knew there were so many differences?This book is not (and does not advertise itself to be) a book about learning Spanish. It does not go into depth about grammar, pronunciation and so on. There are many other titles that do this and if you were going to Argentina with the sole purpose of learning tango, you probably don't have time or desire to get everything correct.Like all phrase books, it is often difficult to structure the phrases in a way that makes it easy for readers to remember what they've read. There's a ton of phrases in the book but no easy way to memorise them. Hopefully I'll remember the phrases when I need to use them in Buenos Aires.The book is not heavy reading, if you're a last minute person like myself, you can read it several times on the flight over to Argentina.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book. This book delivers exactly what the titles says AND MORE! It's full resources, tips, and essential information not only for learning Spanish but goes into detail on cultural differences between Argentinian Spanish and the Spanish spoken in other countries. As someone who grew up speaking Spanish, but never formally studied it I realized that I was misusing some of the words (so embarrassing). The last thing I'll say is that Tango Spanish makes learning fun and keeps you engaged which is necessary for language learning. Take it from someone who has studied six foreign languages.
It provides lots of interesting info on language and many expressions to head to Argentina with great confidence. I've also found the tango tips practical and up-to-date as they come from the authors' personal experience, which I found very important, as it isn't another theory book. I would definitely recommend it if you want to get started with tango or are dancing already.
