I didn't have high expectations for this novel, so I was actually pleasantly surprised by how good it was. I was so enthralled that I read it in one night (not a super quick read since it's 280 pages with medium/large font so work sucked the next morning but worth it). If you're coming from the MCU, you'll still be able to jump right in without being confused. I feel it'll actually make you love Carol even more if you're a new fan. I would actually recommend this to people who are new fans and want to learn more about Carol, but are a little intimidated by the comics, and definitely recommend it if comics are just not your thing but want to know more about Carol's character.WARNING, very, slight spoilers ahead with my more in-depth feelings and book comparison:......The thing that surprised me most about this book: Carol is not the star. Instead the young woman she meets, steals the spotlight and I love it. I'm an avid badge carrying Carol Corps member, and the young woman, Rhi, realizes how much strength she herself has after spending time with Carol, just how Captain Marvel makes me feel. I might be more biased on this review than I thought..... Continuing... After meeting, Carol and Rhi form a team and heroism ensues. For MCU fans you'll find familiar faces. For hardcore Carol fanatics, you'll have familiar banter as well as a great surprise!If I had to compare this book to a mainstream one I would call this "Handmaid's Tale Lite + Superheroes", because of this, I myself wouldn't really recommend this to every child under 12 (so protective parents I suggest a personal read through to judge yourself, I don't personally have kids nor do I know yours), although there is nothing super explicit or gory when it touches on the darker themes. I would classify it as a Young Adult prose novel, so a very easy read. It's also definitely a female empowerment book touching on historical and current themes. There are amazing, powerful women, but there are also not so great ones. There are horrible men, but also caring, endearing ones. In this sense, the book is very balanced. There are also LGBTQ characters, POC, and aliens! You'll feel horrified and angry, as well as smart and powerful. You will have fun, but your heart will also feel heavy at times. It really is a MARVELous book.Mild gripes: The hardcover book is not done in signatures (so it can open easier / lay flatter) which is very disappointing for a 280 page book, although the cover wrap is beautiful with spot gloss. Totally biased: 5 stars, I give it an extra star for being about Carol Danvers! So 5 stars!! Give it a try, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I'm already on my second read through.

This book is well illustrated with color. A great book for reference of different uniforms.

Mollo put out a series of color print books of different eras this on the AWI. As such it's invaluable to the figure painter. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

I am drawing a comic that takes place during the Revolutionary days in America, and I really needed a book with accurate colored drawings of of American, British, Hessian, French etc. soldiers.And when I opened the book to find just this, I was absolutely thrilled- It provides many, many pages of illustrations that will work just perfect for me. There are also illustrations of weapons and flags used, which I also find very useful.For a long time I've been searching for a book like this. I couldn't be more pleased.

There are as well 26 additional illustration of weapons , Head Gear , 24 Flags , ornaments (i.e. buttons , buckles , ) along with British rank and file lace and facings . A very impressive small book of 228 pages with small print ( to cram a lot of information in ) descriptions of every item illustrated . If you can have only one book devoted to American Revolution uniforms this is it . I have four other good to excellent books of Revolution uniforms . This is the by far most complete single book on the subject . The subjects are usually 3 to the page and 4 to 5 inches tall . Sufficient to see much detail and done in a fair variety of poses . I highly recommend it to any one interested uniforms worn during the War of Independence good guys and bad ( you choose who is what )

I am a white natural born citizen of the U.S. who was married to a natural born citizen of Japan who lived here most of his life and was a U.S. citizen for most of his life.

It reminded me of what people go through in war times particularly if you had Japanese connections during World War II. They went from having a great life to living in horse stalls!! I can't imagine what that was like. But it reminded me to never take life for granted as some people had it so much worse and many lived to tell about it.

A story based on someone who lived through it. How different cultures are treated and what war does to people by our judgments and feelings. How a friendship could have been made at college but wasn't because of race. But in the end the girl matured and helped out a roommate that she felt sorry for.

This book held my interest from beginning to end. As I was only five, I never knew much about the camps for Japanese (and those related to them) during WWII. This book inspired me to read more about this period in history. This book is well written and will tug at your heartstrings.

This is an older book that I somehow missed. Wow!! I knew about the Japanese interments but this was so detailed I had a hard time putting it down. It was so well done that you felt you were there with them sharing their tears and fears. I just wish she could continue the story in another book. She always leaves me wanting more of the story. A good read for the winter.

This is one of the best stories of history relating to the internment camps of Japanese Americans. I was a child during this time, and was very much afraid of our then enemy, but what had happened, should never have. As the war ended some Japanese Americans moved east. We were lucky to have had such a family move into our neighborhood. Their youngest daughter was born in one of those camps and with it all the family still loved America. They were wonderful people, and this book gave me a better picture exactly what they went through. I am an Italian &(Scots) American, who had an Italian last name and that could have been me and my family.

I was not expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did. I had known what had happened to the Japanese during World War 2. It was an outstanding writing about a Japanese young woman and her trials during that time.

About the Author

Matt Doeden was born in southern Minnesota and lived parts of his childhood in Golden Valley, Minnesota, and Madison, Minnesota. As a third grade teacher, I'm always on the hunt for a great biography. This book was perfect! It had a great balance of pictures and facts, giving my third graders enough information to complete nonfiction biography writing, but also keeping them entertained. :)

I was expecting more on "How To -s"I would reccommend this book to those who want a bio of Shaun

When Shaun White was born in 1986, no one would ever think he would become a world famous athlete because he was a sickly baby in need of heart surgery. Tetralogy of Fallot is a "heart problem that affects the supply of oxygen in the blood" and he needed heart surgery when he was an infant. He soon turned into a very active little boy who loved to participate in all kinds of sports, including skateboarding. Shaun was into skiing, along with the rest of his family, and when he saw snowboarders at Bear Mountain in his native California he was hooked. The only problem was that he was only six-years-old and the resort wouldn't consider giving him lessons until he was twelve. No sweat . . . his father, Roger, took the lessons and in turn taught Shaun.Of course his mother was not happy with the idea and said he could only ride fakie. Shaun had found his sport and by the time he was seven he started to win championships. If you watched him in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, you saw some hot moves. He was catching some big air and stunned the world by landing his final trick, the Double McTwist 2060. According to Peetu Piiroinen, who placed second, "It's impossible to beat Shaun unless he falls." Shaun was a "snowboarding natural" when he was a youngster and, as amazing as it seems, appears to get better every year. This is one of the best fermentation books out there! The other best book on lacto-fermentation is Fermented Vegetables, by Kirsten and Christopher Shockey. This book is a joy to read. In the book it talks about the how to, science and history of lacto-fermentation. And at the authors website "ferment.works" they have really awesome customer service! I have already made four different types of ferments: I made the Spicy Carrot And Lime Salad ferment, Horseradish Mustard ferment, Spicy Onion-Mango Ferment, Turmeric Golden Beet Salad ferment, and all of them were VERY delicious! I Would highly recommend this book!

This book is the REAL deal. Every recipe is a winner, there are tips throughout the book to insure you success. The photography is so realistic it makes the food jump off page. My favorite recips are the Thai - inspired Green Bean Relish and the Green Bean Kimchi. Buy the book and get your ferment on

I'm a spicy food blogger and when I began to research fermenting my copious chili pepper harvest, this is one of the first books I came across. It quickly became my "go-to" book for fermenting. I have learned so much from this book. It has a place on my desk at all times. The authors have outdone themselves with this work. Highly recommended.

I stayed up hours late just to read this thing cover to cover like a regular book, in fascination. And I'm not much of a cookbook fan normally. It's interesting, humorous, informative, creative, and really brings home not only a wide variety of recipes for fermenting, but the underlying point: that it's an infinite canvas for anybody to play with, with just a few components and ingredients and some imagination. It's got lots of brief notes in passing that seem like valuable tidbits for someone new to fermenting (like me). Totally worth it!

This is a very informative book. The authors mix a variety of information, recipes and personal experiences to make the book not only useful, but enjoyable to read. It is evident that the Shockeys have a passion for making fermented foods, and they think outside of the box and try new things. Some worked for them, and some didn't, but it helps me as I can avoid some pitfalls if I learn from others experiences. It is much more than just a recipe book. This is the second book on fermenting that I have by the Shockeys and both have been great.

I just got this book after waiting for it a long time. I absolutely love what I see so far. Lots of great ideas. Can't wait to get started. I love fermenting foods, and although not everyone love HOT stuff, I do. I see so many ways to enhance my meals with this ferments.

This is a great book for beginning fermenters like myself with lots of information and the why's and hows for the basics as well as some great recipe ideas for uses. I've made several items and some of the recipes which use them so I highly recommend it to fermenters at all stages.

This is one of my favorite fermenting books. The Shockeys know their stuff. All the recipes I’ve made so far have been fantastic, but my favorite is the carrot habanero hot sauce - perfect to make for gifts and so good.

Alvin F. Poussaint is a renowned scholar, psychiatrist, and consultant. He studied at Columbia University and Cornell University, and is currently at Harvard Medical School, where he serves as the dean of students. He is the author and coauthor of many articles and publications including Raising Black Children and Lay My Burden Down: Suicide and the Mental Health Crisis Among African-Americans.Amy Alexander is an award-winning content producer. A 2008 Alfred Knobler Fellow at The Nation Institute, she has contributed to many prominent publications, including the Miami Herald, Boston Globe, Village Voice, Washington Post, and the Nation. She has also written for Salon.com and TheRoot.com, and was associate producer of NPR’s Tell Me More, with Michel Martin. The most valuable aspect of this book for me is the perspective of the author about her brother's suicide and how it effected her. That's unique and only she can tell us about that.Anyone who uses Google can readily discover statistical evidence demonstrating that Blacks are committing suicide far more often now than we did forty years ago. Having read many scholarly articles and National Institute of Health reports about suicide, I did not find that I learned substantially more through this book.Nonetheless, I have only the deepest respect for its authors and I hope the Black perspective they bring to the topic will help caregivers keep Black patients safer and provide therapy more effectively; help Black families escape denial to confront reality when a member of the family is considering suicide; and even help people considering suicide to realize that they are not alone in their anguish.A book that offers those benefits is well worth offering to those who might be helped.

Helpful for those in the mental health field who want to expand their horizons a bit. The authors bring up past issues and show how they still continue to affect people today. It was well-written and easy to follow.

Dr. Poussaint and Ms. Alexander tell the story of the treatment Blacks in the mental health system with convincing accuracy. The cases they cite should be a warning and send a message that racism in health care still exists, and should be addressed by all, most especially those of us of color who treat people of color.

While I am a big fan of Dr. Poussaint's work, I was disappointed with this work. It did not offer much in the way of concrete conclusions or solutions to walk away with.

This book helps you to understand more about depression and how African American women are affected by it. I would recommend this book for those women who are questionong whether they are depressed.

This really gives a good prospective on Mental Health in the African American Community. It is really good book i reccomend anyone that is into learnng more about mental health issues, should read it.

Everyone in the Afro American community needs to read this book.It's has helped me cope with the death of my son.It also addresses the slow suicide of drug, alcohol & sex addiction afflicting our most important resource; our youth.A grieving mother.

My mother died by suicide when I was 9 years old. What I find most amazing till this day is how my family (we are African-American) refused to talk about her mental illness and the circumstances that lead to her death. For years, I would rather lie about her death and her illness, than admit that she was mentally ill.This book takes the blinders off an issue that we don't like to talk about in the black community. How many times have we heard comedians joke about mental health issues being a "white man's disease". But the truth is that mental illness affects people of all classes, ethnic backgrounds and religion. It can especially hit the poor very hard due to insufficient access to health care. With necessary information, statistics and a very objective approach, the authors of this great book show how mental illness is more of a problem than we would like to think, and yet "age old stigmas" (especially the one that associates mental illness with being crazy) make it hard for us to seek the treatment that we need. Of course, there are other issues that are addressed, such as the insensitivity of the health care community towards the health care needs of African-Americans.This book is a must read for anyone sinmcerly concerned about the overall health of the African-American community and our society as a whole

I enjoy reading travel books written by women because I am a retired woman who loves to travel, and I am very interested in moving somewhere my lifestyle fits my budget. This book has answered so many of my questions, not only what to do when moving to Mexico, but how to do it. It is Queen's down to earth, step by step journey written with humor, and it so fits me, I pictured myself right there with her. She seems to have found her "perfect place", as I hope to do one day. I enjoy this book.

I am one of those people who has made the move to Lake Chapala (and love it here). From afar on Facebook in 2016 I enjoyed following Queen's journey. I arrived one month after Queen, and looking back, this book would have made a huge impact on me while I was planning my move. I recommend this to anyone sitting at their desk dreaming of moving to Mexico. With dynamic personal stories, Queen takes you through a list of important considerations from health care, how to stay connected with family, to what it takes to bring a car or your cat (both can be complicated but are possible) to Mexico. Once in Mexico, Queen fills you in on the feelings of vulnerability, but also the inner strength she gained, after making the big move. I appreciate that this isn't a dry list of things to check off before your move- it weaves the practical with humor, and highlights the upsides and the challenges of changing your life on a grand scale. This is a must read!!

I am a friend of Queen, in Mexico, and was fascinated that she'd written about her journey here. I had to buy this book, and I highly recommend it to you. First, if you're interested in living as an expat in Mexico, her book will give you the pretty complete low-down on that decision making process, including all the nitty gritty stuff that you really should include into your own 'considerations'. Second, she is innocently unaware that she is a very entertaining person, engaging life full on and taking it all as a beautiful ride. So I think she's amazingly fun to watch and to read about. Queen, if you read this, it's time to write the next book, your life chapters you've detailed are just wondrous to read about. Please!

I love this book! It is short, to the point, insightful, and just needs some empty pages at the end for my to do list. It is a story and a guide book. It is funny and full of real things that real people need to consider when moving to other countries. Even though Mexico is featured here, I think these considerations are useful for moving anywhere away from home.

Queen mixes her personal experiences with practical advise to write a book that will help anyone considering moving abroad. Especially like the parts where she talks about how she connected with others and improved her health.

She also dispels the notion that one needs buckets of money to live here. This book is a must read for anyone considering retiring abroad
