Good read. I bought this to relive something I experienced myself (90's & early 2000s underground rave movement) through someone else's perspective to see someone else's experiences and compare them to what I remember. Now keep in mind I experienced this movement in NYC, and really nowhere else. This book (and its author) clearly has a perspective from the UK. But it was entertaining to read, and I learned a lot of things I never knew about the movement that the author was aware of that were happening around the world at the time, and does a good job of telling the stories of the parallel things and events occurring around the world since the 80s that brought the rave/edm scene from an underground acid house movement to where it is today.

A lot of critics of the book complain about Reynolds' highly opinionated views on the developments of electronic dance music. This is a mistake; a wholly academic research and categorization with no regards to the vivid, honest opinions of the people who were there is of no use when much of the magic is about what it represented, where the parties happened, who were its consumers and creators, and so on.Reynolds describes the ambiances, locations, producers, labels, and theory behind the music, parties and institutions that compose the music of that era. It adds social significance to those of us who have only the sounds free of context. A must-have for anyone with interest in electronic music of the past and present.Simon provides a refreshing, highly informative, and thorough overview of dance culture. It has made me appreciate and discover music I would not have found otherwise, and clarifies many questions I had on musical preference.

This book is a lot of fun to read and gives a great overview of UK EDM and the myriad styles, and culture surrounding that music.

Reynolds is one of my favorite music journalists, but he particularly shines in Energy Flash. As the analytical fan, Reynolds captures both the factual history of rave culture AND the emotional "rush" that comes with the scene & it's sounds. This book is like DJing prose - a sonic journey through the written word.

Sure, Mr Reynolds has a fondness for hardcore rave, but we were all sucked into electronic music by one genre or another. One has to start somewhere. He has done a fantastic job cobbling together all the disperate elements that make up the rave culture and explaining them to those of us that were there (and have difficulty remembering) and those who wern't.I found the extra chapters from the American eddition a most-worthy addition as these touched on some of my favourite developments like trance and progressive house of which I am a particular fan.Congradulations to Simon Reynolds for finding the vocabulary to describe what we heard all those years ago and to peg down some of those elusive feelings we had whist jiving amoungst the smoke machines of our youth.I've moved straight onto his next book - Rip It Up and Start Again - I'm hooked.

A must-read for anyone interested in the history of electronic music or the UK rave scene

Huge book. It's a little dry and the later chapters are pretty irrelevant to what I'm interested in, but the first 1/2 of the book detailing the rise of dance music and its influence in the UK is great. Nice record list to work through finding too.

Its a good read if you haven't read other books about this particular culture. Its good that he had a section explaining the updated version explaining what has changed and what hasn't.

This is an excellent introduction to law. Although it was overpriced, in my opinion, there is a substantial amount of knowledge to be learned within its pages. I thought about selling it, but it's too good to let go.

This is an important book for any photographer.A. It assumes you are familiar with and own studio lights.B. It also assumes you are a pro photographer.It is very well written in terms of lighting, angles, modifiers, camera settings, etc. nothing is left out. You are able to see the finished image as well as the set-ups. The book is short on theory as it is very practical book.Bottom line: If you want to shoot fashion or learn how to achieve "The Look" this book is a necessary start, and worth every penny.

As a professional photographer for over 30 years I find this book very interesting. The book reveals more about how the photographer was thinking about each photo and why more so than how they did it. I like that approach, other readers looking for more details may not. Gatcum tells me just enough about what was used to create the lighting allowing me to verify my own read on what was done and also answer the old how did they do that? Some of the shots are done simply and some have all sorts of lighting going on. The interesting part is getting a read on the why of each image as much as the how. I find myself just enjoying the book and it's images rather than feeling I am reading a textbook.

The variety of photos in this book was surprising. Although it doesn't always go into the deepest detail for the lighting set-up, the diagrams and resulting photos are enough to get you started, or at least to let you decide if that is a direction you want to consider.If you've ever attempted to replicate photos from a magazine and couldn't quite figure out the lighting differences between their photo and yours, this make let you in on the missing link.

I grabbed this book in hopes that it would fire up my creative juices by sharing some fashion inspired lighting ideas. I had hoped for insights in the how's and why's to give me some ideas that I may not have considered.In my opinion it falls a bit short of that mark. Yes there are a large number of sample images and descriptions of the lighting. Unfortunately the lighting descriptions in 99% of the circumstances don't mention anything about the lighting ratios, and what's almost worse than that is that there is little insight about what the photographers were after. Why they chose to light things the way they did. With these two drawbacks you're left with: a) recipe for a cake that tells you the ingredients, but not the quantities. b) A sample result with no insight as to why the lighting formula was chosen in the first place.Another thing about this book that may be of interest to another photographer is that I'd estimate that of the 50 examples, I'd bet that half of them are natural light. Yes, it's good to hear that natural light can be used effectively but what I had expected and hoped for was studio lighting templates.While the book makes no real claims about post processing tips there are a few mentions of using PS for specific effect. And since just about everyone is shooting in digital these days, information on processing those digital negatives can be pretty crucial. Unfortunately when post processing is mentioned there is almost no detail for someone needing direct guidance in that area.I don't think that I would recommend this book.

This book does have some good concepts. There is a glossary of photography lighting concepts at the beginning that it fairly detailed. What I learned after reading this book was that this was just filler to make the book bigger and therefore justify the price.The concepts in this book are not outlined well enough to be taken seriously. For that, I would recommend you look at something more comprehensive by someone like Scott Kelby.

This book really helped me understand the entire concept of lighting! I've tried multiple setups featured in the book and it hasn't failed me yet! Awesome book to check out to up your photography skills.
